Colibri Goes To The MAX For New Title

Colibri Goes To The MAX For New Title

Posted: Jun 8th 2009 By: CMBurnham

MWA's Most Popular Wrestler of the Year for 2008 El Super Colibri achieved another milestone in that federation when he defeated 4 other stars in a grueling 5-way Ladder Match to become the inaugural MWA MAX-Division Champion.

Since running X-Cal out of MWA, Colibri has seemed a bit directionless. He suffered losses to Southern Tag Team Champions The Jet Setters in seperate matches in March and May and wasn't even on the card in April. So many fans may have thought he was in a bit of a slump as he entered the match Friday in Spavinaw. And when it was revealed that his tag team partner Justin Lee would also be in the match, fans could have been forgiven for writing off Colibri's chances entirely. After all, Lee has 8 years experience in this business and is one of Colibri's closest friends. Who wants to put their friends at risk in this type of situation?

But it wasn't just Justin that Colibri was facing. 3 other competitors, all in the Cruiserweight division, were involved in this match. The one Colibri was most familiar with was ComPro Tag Team Champion Brett Taylor, 1/2 of the team that beat Team SuperBad for those tag team titles. Due to Justin's injury, he and Colibri have been unable to get revenge on Crazy Beautiful, although Colibri has been trying on his own. But the numbers game was just too much.

And the numbers game would come into play during this match as well as the final two entrants were the members of the reformed Nemesis; Damien Morte and Rage Logan. Both men have extensive experience in these types of matches as they and matches like them are regular occurances in SWCW. While Logan and Morte were making their MWA debuts (as was Taylor), this in no way suggested that they weren't prepared or were intimidated by the sitution. Of all the competitors, they probably felt more at home in this match than any of the others.

The action in this match started immediately after the bell rang and didn't stop for the duration of the match. 4 ladders were presnt and by the time the match was over, it seems as if two of them would never be used for anything except scrap metal again. About 1/3 of the way through the match, Brett Taylor was hit in the forehead by one of those ladders and received a laceration near his left eyebrow. He was escorted to the back and appeared to be out of the match. This allowed the match to break down to a Tornado Rules situation between Nemesis and Team SuperBad, but at times even partnership didn't prevail as Morte and Logan fought amongst themselves to try and be the first man to get to the top of the ladder and grab the belt.

Afer being treated and bandaged, Brett Taylor returned to the match, much to the surprise of the participants. But he was clearly affected and unable to participate at the level he had started at, so essentially it was still a 4-man match. The end came as Justin Lee did a top rope somersault plancha onto Taylor, Morte and Logan, laying all 4 men out in the ringside area. This left Colibri unchallenged to ascend the ladder, unhook the belt and hoist it high as he became the inaugural MWA MAX-Division Champion. The locker room emptied to celebrate his victory and the crowd screamed in such a way that it seemed the Beatles had come back together and were performing live.

Despite his victory in Spavinaw, Colibri was unable to move closer to becoming a dual champion when he was eliminated the next night from the tournament to determine the first ComPro Showtime Champion by Ignition. It took the combined efforts of 7 men to achieve this as the entire Boss Campbell came out to ringside to distract Colibri. Colibri did a suicide plancha over the top and came straight down on Boss. This brought the entire Popped Collar Posse to ringside to assist Boss and while the referee was attending to this, Ignition (who had previously switched with his twin brother Reckless) made the switch. As the Shadow of Death redirected attention in the ring, Colibri was overwhelmed by all the distraction and could not kick out of the full-nelson suplex, allowing Ignition to advance to the finals.

Nemesis used their experience in this match to pull a victory for Rage Logan in a Battle Royal/Ladder Match at this past Sunday's SWCW event. The match started as a Battle Royal with 8 men in the ring. After lots of action, it came down to two men, Logan and Damon Windsor. Both men battled each other hard until Damien Morte, who was not entered in the match, came to the ring, scaled the ladder and grabbed the briefcase at the top. He then slithered back down the ladder and exited the ring, all while Windsor and Logan were recovering from a brutal move in the ring. Windsor, seeing Logan laid out, ascended the ladder, but discovered there was nothing there. Rage recovered and Morte threw the briefcase in to him. Referee Rob Justice turned around, saw Rage in the ring and holding the briefcase, and declared him the winner. Logan now has 90 days to cash the briefcase in for a title shot against any SWCW Champion he wants to face.

Becoming the champion was probably the easiest step for Colibri to take. Defending it will be more difficult. While it's unlikely that anymore Ladder matches are on tap for the champion, a long list of challengers is certainly there. An uncofirmed report has reached Oklafan that one of Colibri's opponents in the Ladder match will be facing him for the title on July 10. But which opponent will it be? As champion, Colibri must be prepared for all of them, friend or foe. Or his climb up the ladder of success will be followed by a swift fall back to the bottom of the contenders' list.
