Redemption in Bristow

Redemption in Bristow

Posted: May 26th 2009 By: mikeiles

When it was announced that NWA Oklahoma Heavyweight Champion Spoiler 2000 would be defending the title against Brandon Groom at the May 22nd show in Bristow, you just knew that Brandon had high hopes and history would be on his side.

The Chuck West Fieldhouse on the campus of Bristow High School, has pictures in the lobby celebrating all their All State athletes, of which Brandon was one. The Chuck West Fieldhouse was also the site of one of Brandon's biggest wins of his professional wrestling career as well. In that very building on May 8, 2004 Brandon defeated Michael Barry to win the NWA Oklahoma Heavyweight Title. Brandon and the Bristow faithful both hoped that history would repeat itself.

Just as ring announcer Mike Manos began the intros for the second match, out strolled Mike Iles, who was flanked by Blake Albright and Michael Barry. Iles took the mic from Manos and explained to the fans that his "good friend" Spoiler 2000 had phoned him and said he wasn't coming to Bristow to defend the title. This brought out Brandon with a disappointed look on his face. Iles explained that S2K said he wasn't defending the title against Brandon because Brandon was not the #1 contender. Iles added that Brandon had not wrestled for NWA Oklahoma since 2004 so there was no way he could be #1 contender. But he was going to allow Brandon to "lose in front of his hometown fans" and put him in a tag team match against his charges, Blake Albright & Michael Barry. Brandon protested and said he didn't have a partner to which Iles responded it would then be a handicap match. Brandon said he had a friend in attendance that would probably help him out. He brought out former NWA World Champion Brent Albright. Brent acknowledged his "snot nosed little brother" and said he would have Brandon's back and team up with him.

After Blake Albright and Aaron Neil fought to a Double Countout, Iles and Barry began the "Fan Challenge". Iles picked someone out of the audience to wrestle Barry. It ended when Barry clotheslined the fan and pinned him. Barry and Blake then attacked the fan continuing to beat him until Brent and Brandon made the save. They demanded the tag team match right then rather than wait for the main event. After hemming and hawing, and the referee reaching the count of 9 almost getting a countout, Iles sent his men into battle.

The match began with Brandon and Blake and several moves were high impact and devastating. Both men took to the air as well with thunderous dropkicks. Michael & Blake kept the ring cut in half not allowing Brandon to make the tag to the elder Albright. Michael and Brandon fought each other like they had so many times before. Blake entered the ring again and after a double clothesline from Brandon, he crawled to his corner and tagged in Brent who entered the ring and ATTACKED BRANDON!!! Brent, Blake, and Michael continued beating down Brandon all the while Iles laughed and continued yelling to the crowd about how he was the smartest man in pro wrestling in Oklahoma. After the beatdown, Brent got on the mic and said that after everything he has done in wrestling, and every place he has been in wrestling, there was no way he would come to a town like Bristow and tag with Brandon Groom. Brandon then got on the mic and challenged Brent to a match and if Brandon won, he would become the #1 contender to the NWA Oklahoma Heavyweight Title. Brent agreed and Iles agreed on Spoiler 2000's behalf. Iles, Barry, and the Albrights left for the locker room as Brent had to be restrained from going after some fans.

Brent came to the ring first, accompanied by his younger brother Blake, as well as Iles and Barry. Brandon came to the ring alone, but definitely had the fans on his side. The match began with Brandon using a double leg takedown on Brent to gain early advantage. The match spilled to the floor and Brandon continued his assault. Brent did give some suplexes to Brandon and continued working on Brandon's back which was injured in the farce of a tag team match earlier in the evening. Brandon finally gained the advantage back and power slammed Brent. This prompted Iles to send Blake and Michael to the ring. Brandon clotheslined them both and punched them both. Barry rolled out of the ring and Blake was clotheslined over the top. Brandon then climbed to the top rope and delivered a missile dropkick. That got Iles on the apron to distract referee Donny Brooks from counting the possible pinfall. Brandon punched Iles who went sprawling to the floor. One Airplane DVD later, and Brandon picked up the win while the fans rejoiced. Barry helped Brent to the locker room while Blake assisted Iles.

With Brandon's win is he REALLY the #1 contender to the NWA Oklahoma Heavyweight Title? Just because Mike Iles and Brent Albright agreed to the stipulation, will that be enough for the NWA Oklahoma Championship Committee and Spoiler 2000? One thing is for sure, if a match featuring Brandon Groom has major implications and is scheduled for a show in Bristow, you can bet bottom dollar that Brandon will come out on top.
