Monday Night Mayhem DVD Review -- "Jeff Jarrett: King Of The Mountain"

Produced By: TNA Home Video

Written By: "Wild" Bill Brown

Content: 9.5

A loaded four-disc set containing over eleven hours of footage, prepare to set some time aside, as this latest TNA release is the best yet that will keep you in front of your television. Take a great look at the history of Jeff Jarrett from his early days right on through our current day here in TNA. You will hear from close friends of Jeff, plus many stars from the TNA organization, as everything is discussed from the boom periods in Memphis through the decline in popularity, when Jeff spent many years in the mid-'90's going back & forth from both WWE & WCW and how all these changes happened. You will also find out how TNA was formed, the discussions from various speakers from when WCW closed down, & how Vince McMahon was the only major promoter running in the country. There are tremendous stories as well as touching tragedies that unleash a lot of sad discussion & brutal truth that Jeff fully went through in his past years in this business with those closest in his life. With all the time put into these four discs, believe me there will be plenty to digest which any viewer should truly enjoy.

Video: 8.2

The video production of TNA wrestling is very good & at a top level. This DVD though shares some older footage from the '80's & the Memphis Territory, which unfortunately is not at all from any master videos. You actually can tell they came from outside sources, as stations & weather graphics may appear in the corners briefly while Memphis clips are used. Plus, they have an older look that is easily identified, which can be seen in comparison to the TNA shot footage shown within the DVD. While I can never complain about seeing older footage, the matches/clips used really have a lack of quality & are not enhanced well.

****

Audio: 9.5

Clear & crisp commentary during the documentary & matches. Dolby Surround in two channels. Accurate sound reproduced. The extras & older footage once again takes it down a peg, but everything is heard well.

****

Special Features: 8.5

Five rare & hard-to-find Memphis matches from Jeff's early days are displayed at the end of the fourth disc, after "King Of The Mountain" is completed. Considering this is all they could use (since the WWE owns the rest of his career, as well as TNA featuring his story through the four discs), seeing these matches was very satisfying & showed the viewer the early stages of a future World Champion.

****

Minor Complaints:

The timeline within these four discs confused me. They were focusing on the story of his life, yet always after every segment began showing matches of his TNA career from the start. As the segments with Jeff's life continued & you went back in time, his TNA matches were continued in pace after each discussion. As a viewer, this threw me off constantly & broke both timelines apart. Plus, the sequence of some of the segments Jeff talks through are not even in order in some parts towards the end. In my opinion, it would be better if TNA gave you the entire great Jeff Jarrett story on one disc, with the matches on the other discs. Everything would be in sequence, and this could have made this TNA video a home-run.

****

The Verdict:

This DVD features a great story of the career of Jeff Jarrett, as well as plenty of great matches involving a true legend inside the ring. You also get to understand Jeff Jarrett, the man, and find out how he became a true legend outside of the ring as well. Any DVD that can keep its viewers wanting more after eleven hours of great footage definitely gets a thumbs-up.

*********

Final Thoughts:

Jeff Jarrett "King Of The Mountain" from TNA Home Video is a great alternative pick for any true wrestling fan out there. This is a whole new view of our business from a man that went in other directions to make a name for himself. I would strongly advise anyone to see the latest & best production yet from TNA Wrestling. Despite some flaws discussed, I still give this a very strong recommendation to any wrestling fan.
