Championship Acquisition Proves Costly For Devil

Championship Acquisition Proves Costly For Devil

Posted: Jan 8th 2009 By: CMBurnham

In his 4+ years in pro wrestling, the Canadian Red Devil has had great success in the ring. But that success hasn't always translated into title reigns. Looking at his bio, a total of 6 championship reigns are listed, one of which only lasted a few minutes. So any opportunity to claim gold is one that the Devil relishes. And those opportunities are beginning to present themselves a lot in 2009.

The Devil lost the the TAP Title to Cast-Iron Cothern in August of 2008 and because TAP didn't run any other events that year, he was unable to exercise his rematch clause. So one of the Devil's New Year's resolutions was to reclaim that title as early as possible. On January 2nd, at the first Oklahoma wrestling event of 2009, the Devil got his opportunity as he took on "The Mucker" with his manager, Boss Campbell, at his side. The wiley Canadian not only had to worry about Campbell's possible interference, but early in the match, Tyson Armstrong came out and sat at ringside to observe the combatants, as he had earned a TAP Title shot by winning a Battle Royale in the previous match. In a match filled with stiff kicks, punches and mat-grappling, the Devil came out victorious and became a 2-time TAP Champion. As soon as he won the belt, Armstrong entered the ring and a staredown between champion and challenger occurred before Armstrong quietly backed out of the ring.

While gaining the TAP title was accomplished, laying his hands on the ComPro Title seems to be much more difficult. The Devil has been a regular at ComPro since it's beginnings and made a run at the title when Anthony Jackson held the belt. But throughout 2008, he was more concered with the ComPro Tag Team Titles, which he & The Canadian Luchadore held twice. Now that New Canada have amiaby gone their seperate ways, the Devil has refocused on his desire to add that belt to his resume. But in order to that, he has to go through Draven Cross, which is no mean feat. Add to that the seemingly ongoing problems between the Devil, Pork Chop and Tim Rockwell and the actions of ComPro owner Mike Two should have come as no surprise to the fans. Or the participants.

When the ComPro event opened on January 3rd, owner Mike Two came out and announced that, due to the issues from previous shows, both TAP Oklahoma Heritage & MWA Champion Tim Rockwell & new TAP Champion The Canadian Red Devil were banned from the building until the end of the show. In his opinion, this should have fixed things so that Pork Chop had a fair chance against Draven Cross for the ComPro title in the main event. But Draven's manager, Stevie Caballero, had a backup plan. During the match between Rico Suave and newcomer Goldeneye, Caballero came out to ringside and to observe. He then distracted the referee, allowing Draven Cross to enter and destroy Rico, giving Goldeneye his first victory in his career. Caballero & the champion surrounded the newcomer and Big Stevie then told him that he had "big opportunities" for the masked rookie. Those opportunities would become apparent during the main event.

When it came time for the championship match, Pork Chop and Draven held nothing back. With over 750 pounds of humanity in the ring, there were times when it seemed that the wood & metal would collapse after one of the massive impacts. Stevie brought out his insurance policy in the form of Goldeneye, who was now dressed in red with a mask similar to Psicosis'. Stevie got Pork Chop's attention and said that it was The Canadian Red Devil. It seemed that Pork Chop believed him, but even if that wasn't the case, the distraction worked to the champion's advantage. In the end, a massive spear by Draven took down the challenger, although the champion did suffer a deep laceration under his eye as a result. As soon as the bell rang signalling the end of the match, the real Devil arrived through the crowd and ran into the ring. His intentions were clear as he gestured and pointed at Draven & Stevie.

But behind him, Pork Chop recovered. Blaming Goldeneye for the distraction, the big superstar seemed to think that the rookie was in front of him and waited for him to turn around. He then delivered a thunderous chokeslam to the Devil, landing him on the back of his head and knocking him senseless for a brief time. Pork Chop then left the ring, feeling avenged to a certain degree even though he had assaulted the wrong man.

The Devil tried to gain a little satisfaction the next day when he faced Aaron Neil at the MSWA event, but the effects of blow to the head were still lingering and "The Real Deal" disposed of the competition after a brief match.

In his ever continuing quest for gold, the Devil will team with Justin Lee Friday and challenge The Jet Setters (Jack Legacy & IZW Impact Division champion Dustin Heritage) for the Southern Tag Team Titles.
