Gentleman Or Thug?

Gentleman Or Thug?

Posted: Nov 13th 2008 By: CMBurnham

ComPro Tag Team Champion "Mr. Endurance" Shane Morbid has never been one to top the list as most popular wrestler in Oklahoma. But he has certainly been successful and this past weekend added more championship gold to his resume. Now at issue is just exactly how he wishes to approach the rest of his career, as it seems he is starting to develop a positive relationship with the fans.

When Morbid and his Gentleman Thugs partner, TAP Champion Cast-Iron Cothern, entered Spavinaw, they knew they were in for a fight. They had come prepared to take on the Old School Express for the Southern Tag Team Titles in an Old School Butt Whoopin' Match. The Thugs came dressed in full upscale regalia and planned on wrestling that way. Even in a brawl with no rules, they wanted to show that they were still gentlemen. Jason Jones & Jake Boulder didn't see things that way. They came in jeans, t-shirts and cowboy boots, all the better to fight in. And fight they did. Both teams brought out the plunder and used any and everything they could get their hands on on each other. At one point, Shane Morbid and Jake Boulder had their respective opponents in simultaneous figure-four leglocks, side-by-side and had to combat with each other as well as apply pressure to the victims to try and and gain a submission. Such was an example the intensity of their desire to win.

The turning point in the battle came as Cothern & Jones battled up the ramp and out of sight. The referee could do nothing about this, as falls counted anywhere in the Spavinaw gym. And he could also do nothing as a masked man, later revealed to Oklafan as the Texas Assassin, made his way down to the ring and joined in on the attack on Boulder. The Assassin used a steel chair on Boulder's back, then placed the chair on the mat while Cothern picked Boulder up and powerbombed him on it. 3 seconds later, the bell rang and the Gentlemen Thugs stood as double champions in the state. Shane Morbid returned after the pinfall and the look on his face revealed it all. First shock, then elation and he joined his partner for a celebration in the ring over the fallen OSE.

Apparently that celebration went long into the night as Cothern was in no shape to compete the next day. Morbid's endurance, though, was not in question and he and manager Boss Campbell came to Tulsa prepared to fight. Their opponent: Das Karnage, making his ComPro debut. Karnage did nothing to endear himself to the fans by flaunting the German flag and it appeared that the fans would be forced to watch a match where they could cheer neither man. But sometimes the fans' respect can overcome their personal feelings and while they have never liked Shane, they have always respected his ability. That respect turned into cheers as Shane and Boss Campbell made their way into the arena and were met with overwhelming applause. For one of the first times in his career, Shane Morbid stood as the crowd favourite and the fans relished as he annhilated his opponent, leaving Das Karnage as little more than a greasestain on the mat.

Shane & Campbell came out during intermission and were met by throngs of fans, only furthering their conversion to fan favourites. But some fans thought the switch might be short lived as Morbid & Campbell made one more appearance during the main event pitting Team SuperBad against SWCW Tag Team Champions The Awesome Ones. To their credit though, Morbid & Campbell simply sat at ringside and did nothing to interfere as El Super Colibri & ComPro Oklahoma X Division Champion Justin Lee picked up a victory over the Oklahoma City duo and solidify their position as the #1 contender to the ComPro Tag Team Titles.

The question now is how Cast-Iron Cothern will react to this? Or will he react at all? Cothern's appearances in ComPro have been sporadic recently and owner Mike Two has suggested that if Cothern is unwilling to appear (especially considering how much money he's paying to bring him in from California), then perhaps he should just strip the titles from them. Many believe this is just an effort to motivate Cothern, but what would the effect be on Shane? Could it be that he might realise he's doing most of the work? Cothern already has a singles title to his credit, is it time for Shane to set his sights on the one title that has eluded him so far, the ComPro Heavyweight Title? Be it as a gentleman or a thug, it seems to be Morbid's destiny to ascend to that position.
