"The Shooter" Targets Ray Martinez And ComPro's Freedom

"The Shooter" Targets Ray Martinez And ComPro's Freedom

Posted: Sep 4th 2008 By: CMBurnham

In a total surprise to the ComPro fans, senior referee Mike Two announced last Saturday that he was bringing in NWA World Champion Brent Albright to represent him in a winner-takes-all battle for control of ComPro.

For the past 2 weeks, ComPro owner Ray Martinez has allowed Mike Two to make a single match for the card and has judged his continued employment based on the fan reaction to that match. Each week, Mike's matches have been well received by the fans, despite Ray's criticism and disbelief. Now, it seems that Mike sensed a possible weakness in Ray's armor that he could take advantage of to bring ComPro back to being a fans' organisation.

Mike approached Ray after ComPro Champion Jesus Rodriguez had defeated Bernard Funk to retain his title. He said he had a blockbuster main event for next week and just needed Ray's signature on the contract. Before Ray could sign (or even read) the contract, TAP Oklahoma Heritage Champion Tim Rockwell and his manager Big Stevie Caballero arrived to brag about the flag match for the ComPro Oklahoma X Division Title against Justin Lee. Justin soon arrived on the scene and a face-off occurred between the two. As tension on both sides grew, Mike insisted that he needed Ray's signature and, in an almost overwhelmed mental state, Ray grabbed the contract and signed it, then handed it back to Mike who scurried away with a delightful grin on his face.

Mike returned after ComPro Tag Team Champion Dutch Hagen (with the assistance of fellow champion Rocco Valentino) had defeated Rico Suave. He announced that the main event next week would be Rocco Valentino facing a man of Mike's choosing. Rocco immediately bragged that there was no one in the locker room that could beat him, especially since his allegedly "injured" wrist would be healed up by that point. Just to ensure that point, Rocco insisted that they be allowed to choose the referee and declared Dutch Hagen the prime candidate for that position. Ray agreed and the question now turned to who the opponent was. Mike said Rocco's opponent wasn't in the locker room, but had taped an interview earlier which he asked to be played over the loudspeaker. To La M's astonishment, the sound of NWA World Champion Brent Albright came forward. He said he'd heard that Ray Martinez had been doing some underhanded things and was coming to save the company. To sweeten the pot, he put his NWA World Title on the line against Rocco. Rocco seemed encouraged by this, but Ray was considerably shaken for the remainder of the night.

Ray might have good reason to be shaken as Rocco's record against Brent Albright is not very stellar. It's been almost 8 years since Rocco last defeated Brent (then known as Vinnie Valentino) at an OPW card on September 23, 2000. In the time that followed, Brent has beaten Rocco in a 6-man tag team match (January 4, 2003 with ICF vs. Rick Styles, Ron Mac & Rocco Valentino), a standard 4-man tag team match (March 3, 2007 with Justin Lee vs. Slam Shady & Rocco Valentino) and, most notably, in Wagoner, OK on May 19, 2007 where Brent defeated Rocco for the NWA-U Universal Title, forcing Rocco to retire.

Both men have posted video challenges on the ComPro website regarding the match this Saturday. It will be Brent's first NWA World Title defence in Oklahoma, but will it be his last? Rocco wants nothing more than to add "NWA World Champion" to his legendary resume. But Brent will have the people's interest at heart when he steps into the ring against his cousin one more time.
