Jason Kirby: A David Amongst The Goliaths
Posted: Aug 26th 2008 By: CMBurnham
Jason Kirby is certainly not the most physically intimidating individual. Weighing 135 lbs. at most and standing 5' 7", he's a David in a business full of Goliaths. And his success ratio has been what would be expected in a situation like that. He suffered crushing defeats at the hands of Nemesis. He fought with (and then earned the respect of) Se7en. And he's generally been looked at as a whipping boy.
Kirby's fortunes began to turn at the beginning of July. Having been targeted by Nemesis, Kirby was repeatedly bullied into matches. And while he never backed down from them, he was always outnumbered at least 2-1 (and sometimes 3-1). That changed on July 6 when Nemesis (at that time consisting of Damien Morte, Rage & SWCW Cruiserweight Champion Sage) challenged Kirby to a 6-man match. They told him to find any 2 partners he could and they would publicly embarass him. That wasn't the case as Kirby came out with the South Side Soul Assassins. Suddenly, the bragging and posturing on the part of the arrogant trio stopped. Ultimately, Tyson Jaymes & SWCW Champion 3rd Rail helped Kirby gain his first victory over the annoying trio.
Kirby's fortunes continued after a falling out between Crisstopher Crow and the rest of Nemesis. Looking for revenge, Crow sought out Kirby to be his tag team partner in the main event of the August 17 MSWA event. With both men motivated, Nemesis again found themselves on the losing side of things and Kirby gained some much needed confidence.
This past Friday, Kirby found himself in a 1-on-1 match and this time it wasn't against a member of Nemesis. His new competition was "The Natural Born Killer" Shawn Sanders. Sanders came to the ring alone, as his brother Scott had other business to take care of, but he brought his kendo stick and his new intense attitude. Kirby came to the ring full of energy and with a plan. He wanted to use his speed and agility to avoid the bigger Sanders. And this worked...for a while. But each time he ducked under Sanders' lockup, it simply made Sanders all the madder. And once Sanders got mad enough, the beatings began to commence.
Kirby was pummeled around the ring, able to mount little offence, and when he did, it didn't last long. But the decisive moment came when Sanders had Kirby up on his shoulders, preparing to give him an Electric Chair drop. In the only move he could do from that, Kirby turned that into a Victory Roll and pinned the New Jersey enforcer for a 3-count.
Kirby quickly vacated the ring and with good cause as Sanders grabbed his Kendo stick and headed after him. With Kirby halfway up the aisle, he and Sanders had a brief staredown. What Kirby feared would turn into another beating instead became a sign of admiration and respect as Shawn extended his hand to shake the winnners' and then raised Kirby's hand for all to see.
So Jason Kirby makes another ally in his new career. And he'll probably need as many as he can get, as they just keep coming after him, bigger and badder.
