Morte Scores Surprise Pin on Oklahoma X Division Champion and Challenger

Morte Scores Surprise Pin on Oklahoma X Division Champion and Challenger

Posted: Jul 22nd 2008 By: CMBurnham

Though a mainstay in the Oklahoma City area, SWCW Tag Team Champion Damien Morte has not ventured outside the safety of that area until recently. Two weeks ago, he made his debut for ComPro and suffered a devestating loss to Shane Morbid. It would not have been surprising for him to decide against a return.

But Morte didn't quit. And say what you will about his attitude, he prides himself on being hardcore. He's participated in some of the most violent matches in SWCW history, including Hardcore Battle Royals, Fans-Bring-The-Weapons matches and, in June, a Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match with his fellow Nemesis teammates against X-Rated which sent members of both teams to the hospital. All of this proved that Morte could take a beating and come back. But Saturday night, Morte proved he could wrestle and do so intelligently.

Morte took on ComPro Oklahoma X Division and TAP Oklahoma Heritage Champion Tim Rockwell in the main event of the evening. Rockwell had the size advantage and was accompanied by Stevie Caballero. Morte came to the ring alone. Rockwell looked to dominate the upstart and seemed to be doing a succesful job untl the appearance of Justin Lee. Justin came to the ring and interfered as a payback for Rockwell's interference earlier in the evening during Justin & El Super Colibri's match against the Saints of Twilight. The fans suspected that the match would be declared a DQ win for Rockwell, but that wasn't what ComPro owner Ray Martinez decided. Martinez announced that he was turning the match into a Triple Threat Match involving Morte, Rockwell AND Lee. Rockwell wasn't too happy with this, but agreed to it on one condition: that Martinez make it a non-title match. Martinez agreed and match was on.

Rockwell and Justin couldn't wait to get their hands on each other and Morte was most obliging, climbing to the top turnbuckle and sitting down, watching the two enemies pound on each other. This was a move that confused many of the fans, but it turned out to be a smart move. After all, why waste energy beating your opponents when they're willing to do the work for you? Morte would sit on the turnbuckle until both men were weakened, then move in for pin attempts, being very careful not to get caught too long by either man. He knew he had the advantage here as he didn't have to worry about being double teamed. After all, if there were ever two men who weren't going to cooperate in a Triple Threat match, it was Justin & Rockwell.

After several minutes of fighting, Justin and Rockwell knocked each other onto the mat and Morte saw his opening. He grabbed one leg of each man, did a somersault pulling both men onto their backs and pinned both men simultaneously! The crowd sat in awe as the newcomer, who had only been in the federation, suddenly made his presence in the X Division loud and clear. He pinned the champion and the #1 contender and did it at the same time. Morte left the ring area thrilled, pointing and laughing at his opponents, who obviously underestimated him and were too preoccupied with each other to remember he was there as well.

Morte now has many irons in the fire around Oklahoma. His issue in MSWA with Jason Kirby and SWCW Cruiserweight Champion Sage is still ongoing. This past Sunday, Morte was present at ringside during the match between Sage and Crisstopher Crow. That match was declared a no-contest when Nemesis interfered and then SWCW Champion 3rd Rail hit the ring and destroyed EVERYONE!

And as if that weren't enough, SWCW just announced their first match for the upcoming August 2nd show. Nemesis will defend their titles against X-Rated in an "I Quit" Match. If X-Rated wins, they get the belts, but if X-Rated says "I Quit", they have to leave SWCW for 30 days.

ComPro has revealed that their next Night of Champions will be August 9th. Will Morte be involved in the Oklahoma X Division Title match? Will he be in shape to compete after the SWCW show? If he were able to hold onto the SWCW Tag Team Titles and win the Oklahoma X Division Title, fans would have no choice but to take him a lot more seriously.
