World Championship Wrestling

World Championship Wrestling was owned by Turner Broadcasting, and was originally the name of the Saturday night wrestling show that aired on the Turner owned WTBS in Atlanta, but was then Jim Crockett Promotions, the main member of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). In fact Ted Turner, president of Turner Broadcasting, stated on several occasions that pro wrestling is what helped build WTBS from a fledging UHF station to the superstation it is today. When Crockett sold the promotion to Turner Broadcasting, the NWA name was slowly phased out and WCW became the name of the company. WCW was a member of the NWA for a while but eventually stood on its own. At one period of time, WCW was the worldwide leader in pro wrestling and was regularly beating the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in TV ratings. But high spending on wrestling talent and poor booking decisions led to WCW's downfall. When Turner Broadcasting merged with America Online-Time Warner, pro wrestling was removed from the TV schedule. With no TV package and AOL looking to sell, WWF swooped in and bought out its only competition. The purchase became official on March 26, 2001 and the name World Championship Wrestling, the initials WCW, and the tape library all became part of WWF's "intellectual property".
