Federations
Universal Wrestling Federation
Bill Watts attempted to bring Mid-South Wrestling into national competition by changing the name to the Universal Wrestling Federation. Believing he could compete on a national level, he marketed his federation as an equal to the WWF & NWA and was heavily syndicated around the country. Lasting from 1986-1988, the UWF saw the beginning of the career of Rick Steiner, Shane Douglas, and The Blade Runners (Flash & Rock) now more commonly known as Sting and The Ultimate Warrior. Several Mid-South holdovers continued in the area such as Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Ted DiBiase, "Dr. Death" Steve Williams, Terry Taylor, The Fantastics, and Eddie Gilbert. In 1988, the UWF was purchased by Jim Crockett Promotions and absorbed into the NWA. In 2006, a federation using the namne Universal Wrestling Federation began running shows in Oklahoma. They are in no way connected with the Bill Watts group.
