The Scoop

The Scoop

NEWS
National Wrasslin' League president Major Baisden announced the company will no longer be running shows in St. Louis, MO. During a Facebook Live broadcast, he cited a poor location for the venue and the inability for the company to do significant business in the area. He did announce however that Maverick will still be recognized as NWL STL Champion despite the company not running shows in St. Louis.

To use the "Great Balls of Fire" name for its upcoming pay-per-view, WWE paid a price, and probably a hefty one. Jerry “The King” Lawler revealed on his podcast "Dinner With The King" that the company was contacted by the attorney of Jerry Lee Lewis regarding the use of the name since Lewis owns the trademark for "Great Balls of Fire". Lawler said that he and Jerry Lee Lewis use the same attorney and he got a phone call to ask who can he talk to regarding the copyright issue. It turns out that WWE went ahead and used the name without first consulting the owner of the trademark. Now WWE is not only using the name "Great Balls of Fire" but also came to an agreement to use the Jerry Lee Lewis song of the same name. The trailer for the PPV which was published on YouTube on June 4th already uses the song, which is listed as the official theme song.

After the passing of former "Batman" actor Adam West on June 9th, Jerry Lawler posted on Twitter "Drawing of @realAdamWest I just did a few weeks ago. Still sitting on my drawing table. Think I'll go drive the Batmobile now in his honor. pic.twitter.com/0fGKKB9RUt".

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reported that a couple years back when Jinder Mahal was released by WWE was gonna retire and open up a subway restaurant or get in the real estate business. Last year WWE, as well as TNA, offered him a deal to return as a “enhancement talent” but officials saw he has improved and gave him more screen time .

Highspots is about to release a documentary on the late Bruiser Brody called "Wrestling's Last Rebel." Among those interviewed in the documentary are Dave Meltzer, Bill Apter, Bobby Fulton, Abdullah the Butcher, Stan Hansen, Tom Prichard, Killer Tim Brooks, Slick, Herb Simmons, Larry Matysik (who wrote a book on Brody), Barbara Goodish (wife of Bruiser Brody), Bret Hart, Ron Bass, Emerson Murray (who wrote a book on Brody), Ricky Steamboat, Tony Atlas (who was there essentially when he died), Jim Ross, Jimmy Hart, and Manny Fernandez.

Kenny Casanova, who worked with Kamala on his autobiography, offered up an update on other projects on his Facebook page. He said "After Vader's '2 years to live' diagnosis, we went back to the drawing board. His autobiography was already done, but we needed to add some content. Probably be out fall/winter. In the meantime, I just finished Beefcake's with him. Probably be ready late summer/fall."

A movie documentary on the life of legendary wrestler Sweet Daddy Siki will air in Canada June 12th at 9pm Eastern on The Documentary Channel. Siki, who is 82, lives in Toronto and still hosts weekly karaoke events at The Duke. Among those on the show will be boxers George Chuvalo and Spider Jones and wrestlers Adam "Edge" Copeland, Bret Hart, Bruno Sammartino, Rocky Johnson, Santino Marella, and Nikolai Volkoff.

Oklafan congratulates Big Smooth & Zakk Sinizter, who recently surpassed 6 months as UWE Tag Team Champions. They defeated The Initiative (Brett Irons & Dimitri Alexandrov) for the titles on December 10, 2016 at an event in Tahlequah.

Oklafan congratulates Skyler Fayden, who recently surpassed 6 months as UWE United States Champion. He defeated Dimitri Alexandrov for the title on December 10, 2016 at an event in Tahlequah.

Oklafan congratulates Matt Riviera on his marriage on June 10th.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Ron Starr, who passed away on June 8th. He was believed to have been 67 years old. Starrr, whose real name was Robert Eugene Nutt, competed regularly from 1972 to 1992. In that 20 year career, he held numerable titles, although he was never a well-known national name in the United States. Among those titles he held were two reigns as NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion. His second victory came in a tournament final over Les Thornton early in 1980. About a month after that, Leroy McGuirk, the booker for TSW who controlled most of the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion's bookings, decided to put the title on to Thornton. Starr threatened to sue McGuirk and take the issue to the press, revealing that he had been promised a much longer title reign as well as $500 per week in pay. Despite wrestling's secretive nature at the time, this did not draw Starr any sympathy. Perhaps recognizing this, Starr did not show up to drop his title to Thornton, who won it by default. Besides this controversy, the other biggest domestic accomplishment came when Starr was fortunate enough to get in at the end of Roy Shire's promotion in California and to win the annual San Francisco Battle Royal, eliminating NWA World Champion Harley Race to do so. This got Starr a title match against Race, perhaps the biggest match of his career. But the true heights of Starr's career came in Puerto Rico where he teamed with his "cousin" Chicky Starr in the World Wrestling Council. Accomplishments there include 2 WWC Tag Team Title reigns, 2 Caribbean Tag Team Title reigns, 2 North American Tag Team Title reigns, 2 Junior Heavyweight Title reigns and a TV Title reign. He also briefly competed in the USWA towards the end of its existence, holding the USWA World Tag Team Title with Shiek Braddock. Starr has 21 documented Oklahoma appearances. The earliest was on September 24, 1973 in Tulsa where he lost to NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Danny Hodge. The last was March 7, 1980 in Oklahoma City, where he teamed with Steve Lawler and lost to Brian Blair & NWA World Junior Heavyweight Champion Les Thornton.

Greg Oliver of SLAM! Wrestling wrote a story entitled "Rotten" Ron Starr passes away" which you can read by clicking here.
