NEWS
NWA-U Universal Champion Brent Albright defeated Fred Sampson at the "Viva La Lucha" event in Chula Vista, CA to win the Lou Thesz Bracket of the NWA World Championship Tournament. Claudio Castagnoli will face Sicodelico Jr. in the finals of the Terry Funk Bracket. That winner will face Albright in a tournament semi final match at a location and time to be announced.

Prior to selling his half of Ohio Valley Wrestling to WWE, Jim Cornette was in favor of dropping all affiliation with WWE. The WWE money and the Six Flags shows is what keeps OVW afloat.

Frank Gaddy, who has hosted several WWE Superstar signings at Safari's Sanctuary, sent in the following comments about Chris Benoit: "Chris Benoit was a friend of Safari's Sanctuary in Broken Arrow, OK. On January 23, 2005 I picked Chris and Rhyno up at the airport and took them to Safari's for an autograph signing. That was the largest day ever at Safari's as far as attendance goes. When I got to the airport Chris was suffering from a bad cold. That day was a freezing day in the Tulsa area. I offered to let him go on to the arena and I would just take Rhyno. Chris told me that the fans were expecting them both............and both of them would be there. On the way to the park he had us stop to get him some cough drops since he'd be talking to all the fans. After taking the time to meet the hundreds of people that were at Safari's that day to meet him his cold had gotten extremely worse. But he wasn't about to let his health get in the way of making the fans happy.......and to help Safari's. Safari's has hosted many of the WWE Superstars at the park and consider them part of the Safari's family. From the volunteers and staff at Safari's we offer our heart felt condolences to Chris and Nancy's families. Regardless what drove Chris to possibly do what is being said we choose to remember him for the good he did."

Vince McMahon appeared on NBC's "Today" show Thursday morning and, during his discussion, mentioned that "We've had five individuals since we've been in business under contract to that died; I can only speak to those five." This was in response to a statistic about 60 wrestlers who had died under the age of 45 years and what responsibility Vince felt towards their families. Those 5 deaths are:
1. Chris Benoit, suicide, June 24, 2007
2. Eddy Guerrero, acute heart failure, November 13, 2005
3. Russ Haas, heart attack, December 15, 2001
4. Owen Hart, accident, May 23, 1999
5. Brian Pillman, atherosclerotic heart disease, October 5, 1997

BleacherReport.com has a story called "How Vince McMahon ruined wrestling", talking about Mad Dog Vachon, Crusher, Verne Gagne, and how that wrestling was better than today's wrestling.

Debbie Fernandez, the wife of the late Hercules, wrote a commentary that Dave Meltzer posted on his site. She basically blasted Vince McMahon for turning a blind eye to the steroid use in the company. She said that the wrestlers were too loyal to the business and felt compelled to use steroids to compete and gain attention. She also complained about how, in her opinion, Vince didn't care about the wrestlers, simply using them up and then throwing them away without any pension, health care, etc.

Bill Watts was interviewed on CW 19 in the Tulsa viewing area Friday night. He was listed as "former pro wrestling manager". He described Chris Benoit as "quiet, reliable, had a great work ethic and everyone liked him." He went on to tell a story about an unnamed pro wrestler who is now dead and how he once told Watts that he every morning when he woke up, he wanted to kill someone. Watts commented that when you see someone who's larger than normal, it's pretty easy to guess that they've taken "juice". Dr. William Yates, an Oklahoma psychologist, was also interviewed. He said that "Roid Rage" wasn't common, but was known. He said that the more aggressive a person is in daily life, such as a pro wrestler, the more likely they are to develop "Roid Rage". But he thinks that Benoit's case is more complex than that. During this segment, file footage of several wrestlers was shown, including Watts, Benoit, Ted DiBiase, Junkyard Dog, Dallas Page, Renegade (the one from WCW) and Edge.

Rick Steiner was interviewed in connection with the Benoit tragedy. Talking about the changes that came in wrestling in the 1990s, Steiner said the pressure increased as jobs became fewer and more lucrative. "Now there's pay-per-view every week and TV every night. There's the added pressure to look good and there's 100 guys wanting what you have, so a lot of guys take the easy way out," said Steiner, who is a real estate agent and school board member in Cherokee County. "You got to be ready to go every day, and if not, there's a lot of guys ready to step in for you in a heartbeat. Some guys sell their souls to be on TV," said Steiner, who came up in the business with Benoit in the mid-1980s. Steiner said he took "every supplement I could" coming up. "It wasn't a controlled substance then." But Steiner stopped. "The benefits vs. my long-term goals went different ways." He retired several years ago when his body started aching and he was asked to go back on the road 20 days a month. It was a scary moment. "There's no pension, it's what you save, " he said. "It's over and that's it. Once you are in the limelight and get a taste of the crowd, [some wrestlers] can't let it go. A lot of guys have trouble making that transition."

Jeff Jarrett was recently interviewed by Joe Biddle for Tennessean.com. In that article, he stated that he could "not fathom or grasp this kind of violence. I don't get it. It's sick." He also commented that his late wife Jill, who died from cancer on May 23, was "filled with the Holy Spirit and loved life". He finished by saying that he "couldn't make sense out of any of this. It's the essence of evil" to him.

There are plans for Jeff Jarrett to win the TNA World Heavyweight title in the near future. Jarrett was originally scheduled to be the mystery opponent in the King of the Mountain match.

The reason Rick Steiner was pinned in the Slammiversary match against TNA World Tag Team Champions Team 3D (Brother Ray & Brother Devon) was due to Road Warrior Animal refusing to do the job.

In a strange note, when TNA used Sherri Martel as a possible manager for Robert Roode, Terry Taylor needed her social security number to cut her a check, but she tried, without success, to get paid cash on the spot.

Ultimate Warrior will be on "Hannity & Colmes" later today (Monday, July 2nd).

During a two day meeting, The National Wrestling Alliance interviewed potential teams on the telephone and turned down the idea of a tournament to fill the vacant titles. ?To do another tournament would take too long to execute and we need Champions now? said director Ed Chuman. The teams of Lucha standout?s Incognito & Sicodelico Jr., multi-time tag team champions Billy Kidman & Sean ?X-Pac? Waltman and the controversial Joey Ryan & Karl ?Machine Gun? Anderson will compete in what will be a three way tag team epic. Former NWA World Tag Team Champions The Naturals (Andy Douglas & Chase Stevens) and current NWA-U, ComPro, and SWCW Tag Team Champions Texas, Inc. (Timothy J. Rockwell & Bernard Funk) had both expressed interest in being entered in a tournament had one been held.

The Extreme Wrestling Federation is selling The 2007 X8 Tournament on a 2-Disc DVD set and features Brent Albright, Tyler Black, Tank Toland, Sami Callihan, Billy Roc, Hillbilly Jed, Justin Dean, and Jake Omen. To order go to EWFArena.com

SportsCenter had a highlight of The Los Angeles Angels Sunday evening. One of their pitchers, Bartolo Colon, was mentioned by the commentator as "looking like Andre The Giant".
