The Scoop

The Scoop

Posted: Apr 21st 2015 By: Oklafan Staff

NEWS
The Facebook page of Japanese Puroresu Icihiban posted last week "Both NJPW and NOAH are impressed by the performance of Brian Breaker. There are some rumors in Japan state that he would join NJPW Stable "Suzuki-gun" soon."

Tommy Gilbert & Doug Gilbert, father and brother of the late Eddie Gilbert, have sued WWE, ESPN, and ESPN Classics saying the companies have televised matches of Eddie and Doug without permission and without paying any royalties. They are looking for a percentage of profits and damages. A similar lawsuit against WWE by Doug Somerson (AKA "Pretty Boy" Doug Somers) went nowhere, as did a 1997 case filed by Ricky Steamboat The only difference is whether there will be a distinction between appearing on a free television show and as part of the paid WWE Network. If one is on a DVD, they do pay royalties to the performers on the DVD. So there may be a distinction between a paid network and free television. But that would not apply to ESPN. Doug & Eddie Gilbert appeared on the Global Wrestling Federation shows on ESPN in the early 1990s that later were replayed on ESPN Classics. Doug worked sparingly with WCW but Eddie did more, and both would be on early ECW tapes and Eddie would have matches in WCW and multiple territorial libraries. They also cite Eddie being in the WWE Encyclopedia, but the argument that he will get royalties for being featured in the book is going nowhere. ESPN had a similar case thrown out filed by Stevie "Wild Thing" Ray, who is not the more famous Stevie Ray of Harlem Heat, but an 1980s and 1990s wrestler. WWE released a statement saying, "Throughout the years, WWE has acquired the legal rights to library footage of various former wrestling organizations including Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW), World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and Mid Southern Wrestling among many others. WWE has made these substantial investments to acquire these copyrighted works and has the legal right to use them. Similar cases in the past have been unsuccessful and we expect this case to be dismissed." The suit just came out in the news earlier this week on TMZ, but was actually filed on March 11th in Henderson County, TN Chancery Court for the 26th Judicial District. WWE, ESPN, and ESPN Classics filed a motion on Wednesday to get the cases thrown out citing that the cases of Somerson, Ray, and Richard Blood (AKA Ricky Steamboat) went nowhere.

"Hulk Hogan?s Rock ?n? Wrestling" cartoon series made its debut on the WWE Network last night immediately right after "WWE Monday Night RAW". The series originally aired on CBS on Saturday mornings from September 1985 to December 1986 and had two seasons and twenty six episodes produced. Those portrayed on the show are Hulk Hogan, Junkyard Dog, Lou Albano, Andre the Giant, Wendi Richter, Jimmy Snuka, Hillbilly Jim, Tito Santana, Roddy Piper, The Iron Sheik, Nikolai Volkoff, The Fabulous Moolah, Big John Studd, Mr. Fuji, Bobby Heenan, and Gene Okerlund. None of those mentioned did the voice overs for their character as voice actors were hired to do those. Perhaps the most famous from the voice actors is the late James Avery, who went on the become Uncle Phil on "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". He voiced Junkyard Dog.

Michael ?PS? Hayes wrote on Twitter that there would be surprises during Monday?s WWE RAW from London. When fans tweeted him about not delivering on those surprises, Hayes responded with the following "Wow, I never said HUGE surprises, Rock and/or SCSA will b there. I said surprises, and to me there were some surprises, to each his own".

Sting will be featured in the new WWE produced DVD ?The Monday Night War Volume 1: Shots Fired?, according to WrestlingDVDNews.com. The DVD will feature new interview footage with Sting, Triple H, and Renee Young. The three will comment on each episode of the DVD, which originally aired on WWE Network. The release will feature four DVD discs, or three Blu Ray discs, which features ten episodes of the Monday Night War shows, complimentary matches and moments, and the new interview footage. ?The Monday Night War Volume 1: Shots Fired? will be available for purchase in July, with a volume two expected to be released sometime later this year.

Mick Foley plays himself in a dream sequence in the movie "Dixieland". Foley attended the movie premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, NY on April 19th.

Mick Foley?s comedy show at Full Sail University in Orlando, FL will have additional help as WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross and color commentator John Bradshaw Layfield will be joining him for the stories. The show, titled "Cheap Pops", will be held on April 24th and WWE cameras will be there to tape the special for the WWE Network. Jim Ross is also in negotiations to hold one of his RINGSIDE shows at Full Sail for a WWE Network taping. WWE will tape several episodes of NXT the day before, on April 23rd, at the same location. Tickets for those tapings are sold out however tickets still remain for Foley?s show which are selling for $25 each.

Jim Ross reunited with Edge and his fianc?e Beth Phoenix at this year?s Cauliflower Alley Club reunion last weekend. Phoenix was awarded the 2015 CAC Women?s Wrestling Award. Ross also posted a picture of himself, Edge, and Phoenix on Twitter with the caption "Love this young man like the son I never had. @CACReunion @EdgeRatedR #cac2015". To view the picture, click here.

Jim Ross just announced a one-man show for Saturday, August 22nd at the Gramercy Theater in New York City, the night before "SummerSlam" takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, NY. Tickets went on sale at the usual outlets this past Friday. On a related note, JR also revealed that he is in talks with WWE to tape one version of his show to air on the WWE Network in the future. While details are still being drawn up, the show is most likely to be taped at Full Sail University in Orlando, FL, the home of NXT. ?Fingers crossed for this project which I hope will lead to more opportunities to contribute to @WWENetwork,? Ross wrote in his latest blog. JR was sitting at ringside with his wife during the NXT live event in San Jose, CA during WrestleMania weekend and was acknowledged by Triple H during his in-ring segment.

A documentary called "At What Cost? An Anatomy of Professional Wrestling" debuts on April 25th in Syracuse, NY at the Palace Theater as part of "Spring Fest 2015" presented by the Syracuse International Film Festival at 2pm. The documentary looks at pro wrestling with interviews with Jake Roberts, Greg Valentine, and Dallas Page, and talks about the preponderance of early deaths in the industry. Mark Chervinsky. who has worked on reality shows such as "The Apprentice", "The Biggest Loser", and "Celebrity Rehab", produced and directed the piece. He was also the editor of the MTV show "Wrestling Society X".

Missy Hyatt, real name Melissa Hiatt, was arrested in Leon County, FL over WrestleMania weekend on charges of grand theft of more than $300 and less than $10,000. Hyatt said that a woman left a jacket in her truck, and made a scene about wanting it back. She said she couldn't find the jacket, a scene was made, the woman called the police and claimed the jacket was worth $10,000, although similar jackets go for $75 to $150 on eBay. She said she heard a warrant was filed for her, turned herself in, was in jail for three hours, but expects it to be thrown out or bumped down to a civil matter.
