The Scoop

The Scoop

Posted: May 25th 2010 By: mikeiles

NEWS
At May 17th live "WWE Monday Night RAW" in Toronto, all of the Canadian wrestlers were cheered throughout the night and it came off different than it did on TV. The only time Edge was really booed was when he ran in during the Randy Orton vs. Jack Swagger match.

Beth Phoenix underwent successful surgery last Tuesday morning to repair her torn ACL. "All done!! They said they used extra parts from Robo Cop's knee surgery and spare tissue from a Liger. I feel great!!" she said on her Twitter. The surgery was performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, AL. Phoenix is expected to be out for the next couple of months.

Brett DiBiase, son of "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, also had knee surgery at the same location on Tuesday. DiBiase was expected to be called up to WWE from Florida Championship Wrestling soon however the injury put the plans back on the shelf.

Jerry Lawler launched "Jerry Lawler Memphis Wrestling," with the first TV taping last Thursday. Here is Lawler's announcement: "Hey. I want to invite all my 'Memphis Friends' to join me live at the debut taping of my new TV Wrestling show, this Thursday, May 20, 2010, at 6:30 pm. The location is, "The Vine", 1819 Madison Avenue, Memphis, TN. It's the building right next to Neil's near the corner of Madison and Mclean. 12 live wrestling matches... all for FREE!! First come first admitted...seating is limited to 200 so be there early!"

WWE will be releasing a Ricky Steamboat DVD and some of the matches on the DVD will include:

-Steamboat & Jay Youngblood vs. Jack Brisco & Jerry Brisco (Starrcade; November 24, 1983)
-Steamboat vs. Ric Flair (Boogie Jam; March 17, 1984)
-Steamboat vs. Jake Roberts (August 9, 1986)
-Steamboat vs. Flair (Clash of the Champions VI; April 2, 1989)
-Steamboat vs. Rick Rude (Beach Blast; June 20, 1992

WWE is also releasing a disc covering the history of the Elimination Chamber match. It includes every Elimination Chamber match, including the one from Summerslam 2003 featuring Triple H, Chris Jericho, Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, Randy Orton & Bill Goldberg

In an interesting trivia note, Chris Cruise, who used to work with Jim Ross in WCW in the late 80s and early 90s as a TV announcer, was teaching classes earlier this week in Oklahoma City and got to town on Sunday. He went to dinner at J.R.'s restaurant on Sunday night. He noted the waiter was very friendly and the food was excellent. He noted they didn't have any beer on draft and there were items on the menu he couldn't order. He noted that as it turned out, he was probably one of the last people to eat there since it closed for good at the end of business Sunday night.

Vince Russo is said to be pushing hard for Jim Ross to be signed by TNA. He continues to talk about getting out of creative and work in another facet of the company.

A. J. Styles missed the TNA house show in Lake Charles, LA on May 21st due to a flight delay. He was replaced on the card with Booker T, who drove the two hours from his home in Houston, TX to face TNA World Champion Rob Van Dam. Booker left TNA and was rumored to be joining WWE at the Rumble at one point but talks didn't go further as Booker didn't want to work out the heavy WWE schedule anymore. It's not clear if Booker T has agreed to return to TNA or if this is just a one-time favor.

TNA Knockout Lacey Von Erich, daughter of the late Kerry Von Erich, has found herself in a custody battle for her son as the father is trying to take him away from her. "I can't stop crying. My schedule has been so hectic he might win. I hope I don't have to quit wrestling," she said in a Facebook posting on Friday. The tag team title holder then asked for fans to help locate a good family lawyer in California. In a later posting, dated yesterday, Von Erich said that she found an attorney and worked out a better schedule with TNA to allow her to spend more time with her son. "I'm lucky to have such a family oriented company that works with me," she added.

The big Ric Flair announcement earlier this week in the United Kingdom was three TNA house shows in January. They are running January 27th in Glasgow, Scotland at Braehad Arena, January 28th in Manchester, England at the Evening News Arena and January 29th in London, England at Wembley Arena. Announced as appearing on the shows are Flair, Rob Van Dam, Jeff Hardy, Desmond Wolfe, Doug Williams, Beer Money, and The Beautiful People. Tickets will go on sale on June 4th.

The deal with Mick Foley and Ric Flair are that they have a maximum number of appearances, thus the reason TNA did the Foley leaving the company angle since he had used up many of his contractual dates. Ric Flair is in the same boat, as he is on pace to run of out dates before his annual contract expires.

There is no real update on Mick Foley other than he's likely returning to TNA later this year to promote his next memoir, Countdown to Lockdown. Foley and his wife Colette are donating 50% of the advance royalties from the book to RAINN, an anti-sexual assault organization working with rape crisis centers across the United States.

Mick Foley recently signed a deal to author a comic book series for 12 Gauge Comics.

Terry Funk suffered a ruptured eardrum this past weekend working for Great North Wrestling in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. The injury actually occurred during a pre-show press conference. Funk was brought in as special referee for a match between Kevin Nash and Hannibal. Vampiro (billed as his first time wrestling in his home town), Honky Tonk Man, Lanny Poffo, and Scott Steiner were also on the card which drew around 2,000 people.

Percy Pringle did an interview with Ring The Bell radio last week. Among many subjects he discussed how he and Undertaker still remain great friends. "I had a 15 year career before coming to the WWF. About 1987 we had a big red headed kid coming through Dallas named Mark Calloway. He wanted to be a wrestler so we gave him a try. He was training with Buzz Sawyer at the time, if you call what Buzz did training. He more or less took Mark?s money. But one night we put him in the ring under a mask, called him Texas Red. Bruiser Brody asked me to go to the ring with him as his manager. So I managed The Undertaker in his very first match in Dallas and that was 3 or 4 years before his debut as The Undertaker in the WWF. So we certainly have a history that goes back a long long time and we still remain dear friends?he?s one of the best friends I?ve got in the world." To hear the entire interview, go to RingTheBellRadio.com.

ESPN Classic's "Cheap Seats" on Wednesday night ran a Wide World of Sports episode from 1971 showing Olympic weightlifting. Ken Patera was in the competition and his leg buckled underneath him and he collapsed under the tonnage.

Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel talks a bunch of subjects at Sports.Yahoo.com/MLB/Blog/ and it ends up with the subject of pro wrestling because he was Antonio Inoki's neighbor when he lived in Japan, became a fan, noted he's attended several WrestleManias and said his favorite wrestler was Bill Goldberg.

Oklafan would like to send its condolences to the friends and family of Jet Monroe who passed away on May 12th. Jet Monroe was the real life brother of Sputnik Monroe.
