The Scoop

The Scoop

NEWS
Construction of the OPW Professional Wrestling School facility was scheduled to begin on May 17th and scheduled to be completed on May 31st. The school will be run by Pete Maguire along with head instructor Cole Crittenden and senior instructors Bull Schmitt, Red Eagle, and Treach Phillips, Jr.

The current plan is to build a Jack Swagger vs. The Undertaker for the WWE SmackDown! World title at Summerslam.

WWE made a technical error last Tuesday night in Buffalo, NY. While outside the HSBC Arena at the SmackDown! tapings, a TV in the front atrium was on, focusing on what was going on in the building. What was going on was the wrestlers going through rehearsals of the show. They saw, without audio, Teddy Long and Kofi Kingston rehearsing their skit, the women rehearsing their match, and Jack Swagger rehearsing his segment. The wrestlers practiced until the doors opened to allow the fans in the arena.

Beth Phoenix's knee is in pretty bad shape and she will be out of action for some time. Beth injured it two weeks on "WWE Superstars" in a match against Rosa Mendes. She will have surgery today with Dr. James Andrews for her torn ACL. No time table has been set for her return but she should be out several months.

The Laurel Leader-Call interviewed WWE Studios VP Michael Pavone about the company's upcoming film projects, specifically the biopic on Gorgeous George Wagner. "It?s a passion project for Vince McMahon," Pavone said. "(George) had such an influence on modern day wrestling in general and what we?ve come to know from WWE. But, he was also the father of pop culture." He added: "People like James Brown, Muhammad Ali and Bob Dylan have given Gorgeous George a lot of credit for showing them the way. John Waters, Elton John and Liberace hearken back to things that Gorgeous George did. He became popular when TV was invented and the only thing on was wrestling and Uncle Milty." The studio recently paid a six figure sum for the rights to turn John Capouya's biography on George into a movie. Capouya will be listed as co-producer along with George's surviving daughter Carol and ex-wife Betty. One more interesting note recently uncovered is that WWE trademarked the term "Gorgeous George" back in June, 2009 which was before they first made contact with Capouya who later acted as a conduit to Carol and Betty. The film is expected to start pre-production in the first quarter of 2011.

WWE is releasing a new DVD entitled "Undertaker's Deadliest Matches". Here are a few of the matches that will be featured on the DVD:

-Undertaker vs. Ultimate Warrior (Body Bag Match; July 1, 1991)
-Undertaker vs. Kamala (Coffin Match; Survivor Series; November 25, 1992)
-Undertaker vs. Mankind (King of the Ring; June 23, 1996)
-Undertaker vs. Mankind (Boiler Room Brawl; SummerSlam; August 18, 1996)

The new storyline idea with Ted DiBiase, Jr. is that he came into a large trust fund from his dad, "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, Sr., and is now using the money to pay off guys to do his bidding. There is real talk of making someone his "Virgil" in the near future.

Ringsidecollectibles.com has Mattel's Entrance Greats series 2 in stock featuring Chris Jericho and Roddy Piper. "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase is also in the set but won't be released for a few more weeks.

Jim Ross noted in a recent blog that Cowboy Bill Watts, 71, is getting married again this week. Watts lost ownership of his Mid South/UWF video library many years ago as part of a divorce settlement with his former wife Ene. WWE has been attempting to purchase those highly coveted tapes for some time.

WWE.com recently listed the Top 25 Big Men of All Time. The Undertaker topped the list. Others on the list include:

2. Andre the Giant
7. Ernie Ladd
9. Vader
11. Bam Bam Bigelow
16. Bruiser Brody
17. King Kong Bundy
18. Kamala
20. Haystacks Calhoun
22. One Man Gang
25. Rikishi

This is why I truly miss working with you. You are one of a kind!! Thank you, love you!!"

TNA is starting cost-cutting procedures with ring announcer Dave Penzer the first one to bite the dust. TNA's finances took a hard hit this year with the signing of Hulk Hogan, Eric Bischoff, Ric Flair, Jeff Hardy, Rob Van Dam and others not to mention the production costs for taking iMPACT! live for the months of March and April. Eric Bischoff was a guest on "Monday Night Mayhem" on May 11th and had this to say on the likelihood of seeing either Jim Ross and/or Paul Heyman in TNA anytime soon: "I don't know. I don't know what Jim is thinking & his point of view. I like Jim, and he & I have a pretty good relationship, and we stay in touch from time-to-time. I don't have this kind of conversation with him, and quite frankly, it's been a few months since I spoke to him. Heyman...no idea. But who knows, time will tell. Never say never right?". You can hear the entire interview at MondayNightMayhem.com.

Andre Baker, the promoter of the NWA U.K. Hammerlock promotion as well as a wrestler passed away yesterday, believed to be from a suicide at the age of 45. Baker ran both a promotion and a wrestling school, and helped get started Douglas Williams and Katie Lea Burchill among others, and was one of the first promoters to bring in former American stars for tours like Bryan Clarke, Jake Roberts, Chris Chavis, and Jim Neidhart. Funeral details are not yet available
