Mick's Blog: JR's blog -my new book

I was so pleased to read J.R.'s kind words about my new book. J. R. has kind of become like the Edward R Murrow of pro-wrestling these days, due to the respect his views are given from both fans and wrestlers alike. Wow, that Murrow thing is kind of a dated reference, huh - that's even before my time! But Murrow was a news man who enjoyed that type of respect from the viewing nation way back in the fifties, when network news and the local paper were what everybody depended on to bring them the news of the day. Now, there are so many sources, but for my money, when it comes to somebody who has lived, slept and breathed the inside of the business and seen so many people, matches, books, etc. come and go, J. R. is the man.
I was a bit surprised when he admitted to having fairly low expectations for the book, but I think that admission really gave his plug for the book a ring of truth to it. I think "Countdown to Lockdown" is going to surprise quite a few people, especially those who felt like I was going to kind of phone this one in, or that there would be nothing new or exciting to write about the fourth time around.

I honestly feel like this is the second best book I've written - behind "Have a Nice Day". That book just had a special type of atmosphere around it; a certain purity that came from money not being a factor or even a serious thought at the time. I know I once wrote that I liked the follow up, "Foley is Good" better than the original, but in retrospect, it seems too much like a self-congratulatory victory lap, written at a time when failures and disapointments were not such a regular part of my life. Plus, I just did so much promotional work on that one, that I got tired of looking at it. I really did like "Hardcore Diaries", but I always felt like the two most important chapters were ones I had written at least a year earlier for my old WWE weblog - two chapters that had little to do with wrestling.

I do believe there are some important chapters in this book, too, but they were written specifically for this book, are very wrestling specific, and took months of thinking and weeks of actual writing to complete.

I hope that some of you out there will pick it up and give it a read. Like J. R., I think you'll be surprised.
