JR's Blog: Monday Update..NFL..2X3 Falls..DiBiase..Q&A's..6 Pak Power Slam..6 Sided Rings

Posted: Jan 19th 2010 By: mikeiles

Great way to start a wonderful week here in Norman, Oklahoma with warmer weather and with you paying us a visit.

Our on line business has been brisk and the 6 Pak Power Slam offer along with the Red Hot Tag package, both include FREE SHIPPING, are selling really well. Thanks!

We've got some awesome feedback on our J.R.'s Beef Jerky which I have been a fan of since day one. It's a great, healthy snack and ranks with or better than many the big boys, mass produced stuff.

I went 2-2 this weekend on my NFL picks winning both games Saturday but not going with my guts on the Jets upset win at San Diego. I did note I was hoping for a Vikings vs. Baltimore Super Bowl but that isn't going to happen obviously. I'll make my picks against the spread later in the week. Home teams in domes, however, are hard to pick against.

Did any of you see my Tweets this weekend? The list of those following them are growing exponentially.

Old friend Ted DiBiase is 56 years young today and is a friend that I have known since the 70's when young Ted worked for Cowboy Bill Watts and Leroy McGuirk. Teddy was mentored by many greats including Dick Murdoch and Killer Karl Kox. One of Ted's most memorable Mid South Moments was the time his friend and mentor Murdoch assaulted DiBiase over who was the most deserving of meeting Ric Flair for the NWA Title. This was a graphic and bloody incident that "made" Flair in Mid South and certainly made Murdoch red hot while launching Ted's fan favorite run with resounding and emotional impact.

A "personal issue" with "impact" is a damn near fail proof formula.

Ted learned his skills well, both his Mom and Dad were pro wrestlers BTW, and then was asked to mentor young Steve "Dr. Death" Williams when Doc broke in with Mid South. Ted was a great teacher as he and Doc formed one of the best tag teams of all time. Many fans, when they think of Doc's tag partners, automatically think of Terry Gordy teaming with Doc but DiBiase and Doc were really, really good in their day.

As a matter of fact, the team of Williams and DiBiase would be in my top ten teams of all time and I don't throw that sort of thing out haphazardly.

Ted is now a minister, still makes the occasional wrestling appearance here and there and can still talk with the absolute best in the business. I hope that Ted's sons develop the in ring skills that their Dad did as Ted possessed the Flair and HBK-like abilities to make whoever they wrestled look better.

I once drove the blind, wrestling promoter Leroy McGuirk from Tulsa to Shreveport TV who had a loaded .38 caliber pistol laying in his lap while drinking whiskey straight out of the bottle with the purpose of "shooting" Ted who Leroy had been told had been dating McGuirk's daughter Mike. That was a very interesting 6 hour drive that luckily resulted in no issues except perhaps a little bit of a hangover for Mr. McGuirk who had been stirred up by veteran sycophants that surrounded him when Watts was on the road.

Nothing like a young kid driving a slightly inebriated, blind and angry man with a loaded weapon in his lap 300 miles to "shoot" someone. Ah, the good old days.

Happy Birthday Ted and many, many more. I hope to see you inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame sooner than later.

Speaking of Mid South, former wrestler Pat Rose broadcasts his first one hour radio show this Saturday at 10 a.m. eastern time on KWIN 106.1 in Georgia and on the 'net at www.discoverdade.com. Pat was a tough and talented journeyman wrestler who is now a pro fisherman and hosts a show called "Set the Hook with Pat Rose."

Some fans email us complaining about seeing some matches multiple times. Perhaps this is a generational thing as it wasn't that way in the old days especially in the territory era. How many times do you think that Jack Brisco wrestled Dory Funk? Yeah, I know that many or most of their bouts were not nationally televised but seeing a great match such as Steamboat vs. Flair which was televised nationally multiple times never bored me. I also know that it depends on the skill level of the individuals involved in the matches and the reason or reasons that they are wrestling but wrestlers having multiple matches isn't always a bad thing. If the participants have a viable personal issue, then multiple matches seem like a sound approach.

Got an interesting email about the old, Tuesday Night Titans show that aired many years ago on the USA Network. I loved that show and felt that it provided a focus on the product in a most unique and novel way. Would that format or one updated to today's TV standards work? I'm no expert but I would watch it and I feel that, like "Inside the NFL," it would provide an interesting look at the product. It would be able to slow things down, tell good stories and provide info that could be retained and would, in a perfect world, stimulate viewership on the arena TV shows.

Just like the arena shows, it all comes down to content and execution.

Our 6 Pak Power Slam offer has become our #1 seller. Yep, we pay the shipping to all customers in the USA. It's only $24.88...all in.

Emailers who want to know how to "get in the wrestling business"apparently haven't been paying attention to our blogs. For me to provide advice about one becoming a wrestler without knowing their size, athletic ability, age, etc is more than challenging. I remain steadfast in the fact that no one should attempt to become a wrestler without having a college degree or an established skill to fall back on as the vast majority of those that want to be big time wrestlers will not make it. "Vast majority" may even be as high as 90% who try won't make it. Not great odds on which to bet the farm.

Many Dallas Cowboy fans are upset at the last TD that the Vikings scored Sunday in the playoffs. Perhaps Cowboy fans should be more upset about the other 3 TD passes that Brett Favre threw as those were the ones that really beat the 'Boys. The Minnesota crowd energized the Vikings to an amazing effort and disrupted Dallas' offense which might happen to Favre's guys this Sunday in the Super Dome in New Orleans. If Minnesota wins in New Orleans with a Super Bowl on the line and after all the city of New Orleans has endured with Hurricane Katrina, etc, then it will be one of the most significant wins in NFL history as I will stop short of calling it a monumental upset.

If you've always wondered what a true "Slobber-Knocker" is then I suggest that you take another look at the hit that Arizona QB Kurt Warner took on Saturday. That shot may have convinced Warner to hang up his cleats.

We have updated the Q&A section of this site as of Monday midday.

The Monday Night Raw broadcast tonight in Knoxville could be very revealing as it relates to the Royal Rumble and consequently to Wrestlemania 26. I wonder if any fans will bring any anti Lane Kiffin signs. I'm really anxious to see how the McMahon-Hitman issue is addressed.

I don't think that I have lost my mind when I said that I would enjoy seeing the occasional 2 out of 3 fall match on TV but I never said that format would work for just any two grapplers. The match needs to have a valid and well established reason before having the potential three fall bout. Wrestlers that are weary of wrestling three falls on national TV need to evaluate their skill level and their desire to take their game to the next level. We all have to escape our "comfort zones" no matter what we do for a living unless one has a rocking chair clearly in sight.

If those of you who ask me when WWE is returning to your area would instead call your local arena you will get better, more updated info. I don't know plans for routing as that facet of the biz doesn't really affect me and would simply be more info that would come across my desk that I don't need. Bottom line is that your local arena will know before any one and that's the contact that any fan should make. Check out your local arena's website and you might find what you're seeking.

When I was on the road I really only paid attention to what towns I had to travel to in the course of making my personal travel plans.

Another funny Q&A asked if WWE was going to go to a 6 sided ring in the future. I served my time on the ring crew many years ago and have since sort of moved on from that task but it was a funny question. For those to say that a 6 sided , pro wrestling ring separates promotions, I say that is awfully weak ground to stand on if one is looking to be different. The in ring product and the presentation thereof is what separates wrestling companies.

Jets coach Rex Ryan, who used to coach at Oklahoma University, would have made a great, wrestling manager. This may be the kettle calling the pot black but will the Jets head honcho be the next celeb endorser for Nutra System ala Chris Berman, Dan Marino, Mike Golic, Lawrence Taylor, etc? Yessir...Ol J.R. is available. I'm still trying to lose more pounds and let me tell you that it isn't easy for a man that loves good food. I have learned that one can't diet for a day or two and then stop and then start again and have any success.

I've got a couple of doctor's appointments upcoming to follow up on things but I can tell you that I feel really good and am looking forward to getting back in the hunt. I've always prided myself in being an old school educated, team player and that hasn't changed. I just want to "play" and whatever brand I "play" on will be fine with me. Obviously, I would be lying if I said I would not like a return to WWE's top TV entity Monday Night Raw, but that doesn't mean that I wouldn't want to work on Smackdown again or even on ECW. Point is one is either a team guy or one isn't. I only know one way of doing things and now that my health is becoming less of an issue, I hope, I am anxious to get back to ringside or whatever role the future may hold.

I wish my right eye would heal a little faster as it is somewhat high maintenance and that the facial paralysis would take a hike but all in due time. I refuse to allow negativity to creep in and disrupt my life. Lord knows that it tries and that I often times lower my guard. That''s a big "shame on me" situation.

You don't know what you are missing if you don't try out HOT BBQ Sauce and our Chipotle Ketchup. I guarantee you that you will not be sorry. I had some of the ketchup on my egg beaters and it made them main event level. The Hot BBQ Sauce makes all that Smoked, Turkey breast I've been eating have the personality it needs when one eats the same thing about 3 days a week.

Thanks for stopping by and come back and see us. We appreciate you all.

Boomer Sooner!
