The Scoop

The Scoop

Posted: Jan 12th 2010 By: mikeiles

NEWS
WWE released several developmental talents over the past week including Leroy Morgan (AKA Max McGuirk). Among the others released were Dino Carter (AKA Rashard Goff), Chris the Bambikiller, Lennox (AKA Bryan Wilcott), Lift Swayner, (AKA Aaron Reed), and Sweet Papi Sanchez. Johnny Riggs (AKA Dylan Klein) was also granted his release by request.

The funeral for "Dr. Death" Steve Williams was Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Mile High Church in Lakewood, CO. There were about 1000 people in attendance. Both Barry Switzer, his football coach at the University of Oklahoma, and Stanley Abel, his wrestling coach, spoke at the service about his drive as an athlete. Jim Ross spoke of Williams as being like his younger brother. Also speaking at the service included Ted DiBiase, his tag team partner in the 80's, Stan Hansen, who both teamed with him and opposed him for years in Japan, Terry Taylor, an early ring rival in Mid-South Wrestling, Jeremy Young, who was trained by Williams for pro wrestling, and Leon White (AKA Vader). Among those that attended the service were WWE Vice President John Laurinaitis (who tag teamed with Williams in Japan on several Budokan Hall main events), and several members of the Asylum Championship Wrestling roster. Williams wrestled his last professional match for ACW on August 15, 2009 winning their Heavyweight Title from Franco D'Angelo.

At the Asylum Championship Wrestling "Dr. Death" Steve Williams tribute show, T-shirts were being sold with proceeds going to the family of Dr. Death. Those T-shirts will soon be available at ShirtPhactory.com.

A profile for the recently passed "Dr. Death" Steve Williams has been added to the Alumni section of WWE.com.

The guest host for the February 1st "WWE Monday Night RAW" will be someone who already worked a few angles in the WWE and he is none other than William Shatner. Shatner will be there to promote his show titled "Shatner's Raw Nerve" which airs on the Bio Channel as well as the Hollywood Charity Horse Show. The man who rose to fame thanks to his work on Star Trek and T.J. Hooker participated in an angle with Jerry "The King" Lawler in 1995 on RAW, pushing him to the canvas when he was being interviewed. He then accompanied Bret Hart to a match against Jeff Jarrett who had "The King" in his corner. In 2007, Shatner inducted Lawler into the WWE Hall of Fame.

WWE has again edited the opening to its television programming. Recently, Hulk Hogan was removed from the opening and replaced with the "Million Dollar Man" Ted DiBiase, and Mick Foley was removed and replaced with Jeff Hardy. Following Hardy's return to TNA last Monday, Hardy himself has now been replaced with Kofi Kingston. Surprisingly, "Nature Boy" Ric Flair, who also appeared on TNA programming this past Monday, and who is more prominently featured than Hardy in the opening, has not been removed.

The "ABC World News Tonight" piece Saturday night on the Linda McMahon campaign wasn't much. They showed a clip of Stephanie slapping her, Kane doing a tombstone, her kicking Jim Ross low, and they said Bruno Sammartino and Joanie Laurer have criticized her and her campaign. She said she was willing to spend $50 million to win the election and that Vince would not be campaigning for her (which is obviously a smart move).

TNA promised surprises for the three hour live "TNA iMPACT!" on January 4th and they delivered what they promised. Jeff Hardy, Shannon Moore, Scott Hall, Sean Waltman, Eric Bischoff, Val Venis, Orlando Jordan, The Nasty Boys (Brian Knobbs & Jerry Sags) and the one and only Nature Boy Ric Flair all appeared on the show which was carefully timed against WWE's RAW. Perhaps the biggest surprises where the appearances of Hardy and Flair. Hardy wrote on his Twitter that he's going to the show to accompany Moore however made no mention of him appearing on television. Flair was rumored to be appearing, but his loyalty to WWE made things more complicated. At the end of the day it did not matter to either Hardy - who WWE just released a brand new DVD about him - or Flair as both of them were part of a historic "iMPACT!".

WWE Hall of Famer and former sixteen time World Heavyweight champion Ric Flair shocked the wrestling world last Monday after making his first ever appearance on "TNA iMPACT!". Arriving in style as he always does in a limo, Flair shook hands with TNA workers backstage as he made his way around and later came out to the iMPACT! Zone to observe the TNA title match between A. J. Styles and Kurt Angle. The Nature Boy returned to the wrestling ring in November when he along with Hulk Hogan toured Australia and wrestled in a series of matches headlining the Hulkamania tour. It was his first time wrestling since his retirement match against Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania 24 in Orlando, FL. Flair - who has always been loyal to WWE and the McMahons - often said that he wouldn't want to work with any other wrestling company but things obviously have changed. Last year Flair wanted back in the WWE but the company used him only a couple of times instead, something which was definitely a factor in his decision to go to TNA

Ric Flair signed his deal days before the January 4th "TNA iMPACT!". The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Flair's deal calls for him to make 65 appearances over a one year period. The belief is that Flair received a guaranteed money deal, which will allow The Nature Boy to book himself for outside appearances.

Ric Flair was telling people backstage at "TNA iMPACT!" that he is working on a second book and has signed a deal with Jakks to be part of their NWA Classics action figure line.

The poster for the TNA pay-per-view "Against All Odds" which will take place on February 14th has photos of A. J. Styles and Kurt Angle with Mick Foley in the middle and a big photo of Hulk Hogan's face in the background. "The countdown to Lockdown begins" is the tagline at the top of the poster with the PPV logo at the bottom. You can see the poster by clicking here.

Mick Foley wrote in his latest blog that he called Ric Flair on December 27th to talk him into signing with TNA. Flair didn't sign until January 4th although he had been in negotiations with them for a while. He was telling people at the tapings last week that he has a new book in the works.

Booboo Stewart, who will be playing Seth Clearwater in an upcoming Twilight film, will be doing columns for TNAwrestling.com interviewing various wrestlers. Supposedly he went to "Bound for Glory" and loved it so much he wanted to get involved. His first interview subject will be TNA World Champion A. J. Styles.

Contrary to rumors, Jeff Jarrett did not go off script last Monday night, although Hogan was surprised by how everything went down. He told Jeff to do a babyface promo because Jeff & Foley and Dixie & Hulk are both supposed to be babyface entities. His plan was to out-face him, and then was shocked when he got booed. The idea is not for Hogan to be a heel at this point.

According to reports, all four involved in the Jeff Jarrett & Mick Foley vs. Hulk Hogan & Dixie Carter feud will be faces.

Vince Russo is doing a Q&A at Facebook.com/VinceRusso.RopeOpera. One question was funny was when someone asked him if Shelton Benjamin was available would he be interested and he said, "Not really familiar with his work. Don't watch WWE much." He said the most difficult person he ever had to write for was Bill Goldberg. Russo found it a problem because the formula was so simple. He said he didn't think there would be any bra and panties matches in TNA because he respects the Knockouts too much. Said his all-time favorite feud to write would be The Rock vs. Ernie Ladd. He said the best talent in TNA is Kurt Angle and that Eric Young is the most underrated wrestler on the roster.

Vince Russo answered more reader questions on his Facebook page. Regarding Jim Cornette, he said: "Throughout my entire career I have never said one negative word about Jim Cornette, not one. If he wants to be a Vince Russo and TNA hater, let him knock his socks off, but I'm not really interested in listening to that." Russo also commentated on Internet critics: "It's because they hate me and hate Hogan, and it's also because they want TNA to be a 2 hour wrestling show, with TWO HOURS of wrestling, that ain't gonna happen, so the haters will continue to hate." Russo recently set up the Facebook page to promote his upcoming book, How WCW Killed Vince Russo.

January 4th just happened to be the ten-year anniversary of the famous Fingerpoke of Doom episode of "WCW Nitro", where Nash took a phantom bump for a Hogan fingerpoke and Hogan won the WCW title again, which was one of many things that sped up the momentum of the death of the company. It was also the day that Mick Foley won the WWF Title on Raw (it was a taped show, but it aired that day), where Tony Schiavone mocked it on air, saying "That'll put asses in the seats", which resulted in fans switching from Nitro to Raw en masse to watch it.

Hulk Hogan was on Bubba the Love Sponge last Thursday morning. They played an audio bite from Jim Cornette's podcast where Cornette reviews "TNA iMPACT!". Hogan said he was considering bringing Cornette back but isn't so sure now after listening to that because he doesn't want negative people in the company. Hilarious stuff if you've followed this story. He said Cornette was probably just bitter. Bubba then made fun of the Terror Dome match. Hogan agreed that it was bad. He said he had been assured the guys could climb out.

Bubba the Love Sponge recently blasted Jim Cornette on his show. It is in two parts and you can hear it at the following You Tube clips:

Part 1
Part 2

Jim Cornette at Friday night's Ring Of Honor television tapings announced that for the anniversary show at the Manhattan Center they will bring back Austin Aries vs. Tyler Black and if they go 60 minutes, it will be decided on by a three judge panel.

CBS is shooting wrestling-themed episode of "Cold Case" starring Roddy Piper over the next two weeks. Piper has been training with Ric Drasin at his wrestling school in Sherman Oaks, CA, to get ready for the role. The episode is called "One Fall" and will air in February or March.

Missy Hyatt is going to be part of a World War II Battle of the Bulge recreation in Fort Indian Gap, PA, on January 30th. She is playing the role of a German nurse taking care of the soldiers. She said if any fans want to come out she is taking free pictures.

NWA Oklahoma Heavyweight Champion Carnage is scheduled to defend the title against NWA-SW/PWF Heavyweight Champion Chad Thomas on January 23rd in Amarillo, TX. A video has been posted on NWA-OK's My Space site of Thomas calling out Carnage while sitting on a toilet. You can view the video on the site at MySpace.com/NWA_Oklahoma.

Al Farat is selling an autographed pair of his size 10-D bronze boots with horns. The boots were made by wrestling boot making legend, Bill Ash. The price is $500.00 which does include shipping. The boots normally go for $680.00 new at Bill Ash Boots, and $700.00 at Stagecoach Wrestling Boots. Farat is asking for serious buyers/collectors only. Interested buyers should contact Farat through his My Space page at MySpace.com/AlFarat.
