JR's Blog: Monday Update...Wasn't the Day that was Planned...

Posted: Oct 26th 2009 By: CMBurnham

Let's hope that everyone is having a good day. Thanks for stopping by our site and for telling friends about us. We also want to thank you for your continued business in our on line store that is still offering FREE SHIPPING on many great packages including our custom made, 97% FAT FREE, J.R.'s Original Beef Jerky. We are also still doing solid biz with our two BBQ Sauces and the Chipolte Ketchup which is really becoming popular. This Friday we have our meeting with the good folks at Homeland Groceries based in OKC and we hope to get some positive news on that front of getting our products in 4 stores in Norman, Oklahoma to test market.

I'm trying to stay as busy as I can to keep my mind off of other challenges which seem to be prevalent.

Today's MRI results were not what we had expected and we have more work to do. More tests resume tomorrow morning as the bumps in the road continue. I still remain confident that all these health issues will work out in due time. The road just got a little bumpier, or so it seems, for now, but that's when people roll up their sleeves and fight just a little harder.

It seems that my neurologist and the radiologist who read my MRI of my brain have differing opinions. So we start over to some degree Tuesday and in more intense detail to determine the answers we need to have to move forward.

People keep asking me when I'm returning to work and there is no accurate answer to that particular question.

Again, and I stress, that it isn't a matter of IF but WHEN I will return to broadcasting.

Thanks for everyone's support and tomorrow's a new day that I can't wait to attack.

The judging at Saturday night's UFC fight in the main event was suspect but it's nothing new to combat sports. I am a HUGE UFC fan and I even had some emailers on this site hit me that they thought that UFC "fixed the fight" which is insanity. No way. No how. I wasn't a big fan of the main event of Machida vs. Rua to start with but they beat they hell out of each other in somewhat of a slower paced, stand up affair. Based on many, many other UFC main events that I have bought and enjoyed this one was average. Just like in pro wrestling, the challenge of promoting a viable PPV card with hot main events each month is daunting for any promotion.

I'm not sure that any company can promote a never ending succession of viable PPV's in MMA or pro wrestling on a monthly basis TFN. Perhaps they can and my hats off for trying but the task is not easy and requires tremendous, long term planning, and a commitment to "new." Fans want to see new stars compete and see where they can take their game but it takes a gutsy and committed promoter to pull the trigger on providing "new" stars the opportunity to carry the ball.

Have you noticed that sports officiating in general is taking a spanking more days than not? I think we can thank TV and the multiple angles and technical advantages that the TV people have over the human element and naked eye of a trained official. I officiated over 20 years but I was never in an environment to be scrutinized like the officials are today. I think that game officials generally do a solid job but college officiating may, arguably, be the exception. SEC fans might agree with that one. I remain steadfast that if any viable news entity ever did an investigative report on how college officials got their jobs as in nepotism, business contracts, etc, that many sports fans would be shocked.

Brock Lesnar has had to cancel his UFC next fight until early in 2010 due to flu issues as I understand it. Lesnar is a man's man and UFC should obviously give him all the time he needs to get 100% healthy as Brock is MMA's "bell cow" and should not even think about fighting until he is ready.

Happy to see my friend, Heisman Trophy winner, Sam Bradford decide to use Dr. James Andrews to repair Sam's throwing shoulder. Sam has surgery this Wednesday and we spent a few minutes visiting on the Sooner sideline on Saturday afternoon in Lawrence, Kansas while the Sooners took care of the Jayhawks. Sam wanted to come back to OU and live his dream this year of winning a National Title for his childhood, favorite team but he was dealt a non favorable hand. Sam Bradford is a great kid and will likely go to a NFL team who now already has a starting QB that will allow the Sooner to develop at a steady pace and get a little bigger and stronger. I told him that he needed to hit J.R.'s BBQ in Norman more often and that we would help "bulk him up."

Tomorrow is going to be a great day and all your thoughts and prayers are greatly appreciated.

God Bless....and Boomer Sooner!

J.R.
