JR's Blog: Interesting Weekend

JR's Blog: Interesting Weekend

Posted: Sep 8th 2009 By: mikeiles

Happy Labor Day Weekend! Enjoy it & stay safe. Here's some random thoughts: Tough weekend for my Sooners losing their season opener to BYU 14-13 in the Dallas Cowboys new palace in Arlington. Congrats to the Cougars for doing what they needed to do to win. Losing QB Sam Bradford in the 2nd quarter to injury provided a challenge my favorite team couldn't overcome. However we will continue to compete & fight thru adversity. That's the "Sooner Way." It was a heck of a nite for yours truly on the OU sideline. One dweeb at Sunday's Dragon Gate show Sunday night made an off color remark about Sam's injury & I responded as many of you might by calling him a "wise ass." Not a classy remark by me but I felt it was deserved. Making light of a kid's injury is classless. Plus, a BYU fan actually emailed our BBQ joint calling Sam a wimp or something like that. I never see these emails but our store's manager forwarded it to me asking if she should reply. I instructed her to ignore the idiot who also wanted a free bottle of our ketchup. Go figure. Loved the Dragon Gate show. The fans in attendance were awesome. Their passion was infectious. Bravo to them. The talents worked so hard in the ring. Their style is uniquely fast and athletic. Lots of the great Ultimo Dragon stylings which was expected and exciting. Had a chance to visit w/ Brian Kendrick and he seemed happy which was good. Brian's basing out of LA these days and says he has plenty of work lined up. I wish him well. The King & I met some super fans at our pre-event signing. I enjoy hearing what's on the minds of the fans of the biz. Thanks to all that dropped by to say hello. Hooking back up with Jerry at these types of functions is a blast. Sunday night's banter between two, old broadcast partners felt seamless and had us both laughing out loud. It felt like old times and after Saturday night in Dallas I needed the laughs. BTW the new Cowboys Stadium HAS to be a future Wrestlemania site. That might be a few years away but Jerry Jones creation would hold 100,000 fans which would be a headline grabber not to mention big bucks for WWE. If you ever have a chance to visit this stadium, go for it. It's the most amazing facility I've personally ever seen. Had a nice visit w/ former Sooner Jon Cooper who was told earlier in the day that he had made the Minnesota Vikings roster. I met "Coop" as a high school senior and he's one of my all time favorite players because of his work ethic and toughness. He never got a "push" (which may be the most misused term in the wrestling biz) but turned heads by consistently working hard, improving his game, and not allowing the decision makers to overlook him. This same philosophy works in wrestling too. The King is VERY serious about the Memphis mayoral race. He was on the phone a ton Sunday and we discussed many of the legit issues on which Jerry is focusing. I was impressed. He just might win the damn thing. Most folks are tired of professional politicians and Lawler certainly isn't that. Bob Barker is staying at the same hotel I'm in here in Chicago. Who will get "Happy Gilmored" Monday night? Someone's got to, right? Who's gonna get the Rod Roddy announcer gig Monday night? Won't be this Okie as I don't look good in a sequin jacket. That look doesn't work w/ a black hat. Chicago is a special city for me. This was the place where my WWE Hall of Fame announcement was made on an emotional night that I'll never forget. Plus, the King, promoter extraordinare Michael O'Brien and I had a great slab 'o red meat at Gibson's Steakhouse Sunday night. That's living. Should be an interesting week of WWE as this is the last shot at selling "Breaking Point" PPV's. I signed a fair amount of JR's BBQ Sauce bottles Sunday which was cool. Get your sauces, ketchup, and beef jerky now in our on line store. I promise that you'll be happy w/ what you purchase. USA customers still get FREE SHIPPING on cases ordered. Be well... BOOMER SOONER! J.R.
