Wacky Japan Video Review 2009...Back By Popular Demand

Posted: May 27th 2009 By: CMBurnham

I can honestly say that I'm a fan of some of the wackier wrestling gimmicks. I can even admit to enjoying Doink the Clown at one point in my life. I even admit that I'm looking forward to seeing Shock Wave The Robot on a PWS show on Friday.

Unfortunately there are very few wrestling gimmicks in the United States that can make me bust a gut and roll on the floor in laughter. Last year I wrote a article that profiled the wackiest Japanese wrestling gimmicks that I ever seen. People were emailing me clips of robots, a eleven year old female wrestler, Mummies using power drill arm attachments, card board boxes wrestling, and even a ladder that was a champion.

I currently find Santina Marella being over exposed and not funny by my low standards of entertainment. Luckily many hardcore fans have sent me a bunch of links to cure my wrestling comedy blues.

Kota Ibushi vs Danshoku dino with YOSHIHIKO:
I have heard everybody praising the greatness of Kota Ibushi. This is my first time in watching him wrestle. Lucky for me that he is in a handicap match with a wrestler and a inflatable doll in ring gear. My first question is why does the inflatable doll have better ring gear than some indy geeks? I give Kota credit for selling for a inflatable doll. I howled with laughter when Kota delivered a double drop kick to the doll & Danshoku. The doll ended up shooting in the air and landing in the third row. What a bump! During the match, Danshoku gets hurt and the doll [Yoshihiko] has to work by himself. I can't fathom watching Randy Orton & Yoshihiko teaming up with each other to wrestle Batista in a handicap match as a RAW main event. Just the sight of Orton being injured & Batista having to sell for a inflatable doll = ratings.

We then go to Kota trading blows with the doll. He even puts the doll in a figure four, but somehow a inanimate object reverses the hold. WTF? The doll even reverses a full nelson & got out of a belly to back suplex attempt. The doll even did the greatest tope I ever seen in my life. Yoshihiko could be a major licensing bonanza waiting to happen. This could be a back yard wrestlers greatest gift ever. They can truly play with themselves with the official Yoshihiko wrestling buddy. Unfortunately Kota could not combat the odds and lost.

I always heard the old saying that Ric Flair could have a great match with a broom. Now I clamor to see him carry this inflatable wrestling doll to a 60 minute broadway.

5/4/2009 KO-D tag championship Kenny Omega & Kota Ibushi vs. Dino & Yoshihiko:
Apparently Yoshihiko has already earned himself a tag team title shot. I hate to see what a long drawn out quest for the title must have looked life for a doll. I have heard nothing but great things about Kenny Omega. I seen him once wrestle live at a ROH show. He got major potential. Unfortunately my opinion on him might plummet after this match.

Kenny sells for the doll when it does a cross body. The doll even reverses a body breaker & Kenny takes a bump from it. Yoshihiko did a Great Muta inspired hand spring elbow that had me laughing my ass off. Kenny eventually drop kicks the doll from the ring in to the bleacher section. What a dastardly heel to do this to the most beloved baby face ever! Kota took some awesome bumps for Yoshihiko. Yoshihiko had better psychology then many wrestlers that I have recently seen. Even I had to bust out a "This Is Awesome!" chant to my computer when I was watching this match. Some how Terry Funk must be totally disgusted that I consider him to be my favorite wrestler ever and I'm marking out for Yoshihiko. Kenny gives the doll the greatest giant swing ever. The dolls ends up in the bleacher section! Unfortunately the doll is stretchered off. Thank god! I was starting to get the impression that Yoshihiko didn't know how to sell.

Nope, I'm wrong! Yoshihiko is back in his "Undertaker American Bad Ass" gimmick with video ring entrance. The entrance alone is five stars. Yoshihiko even delivered a double choke slam to his opponents. Luckily the doll did the right thing for the business and lost.

Did I mention that the match went over 22 minutes? Did I mention that the match had more wrestling then a episode of Impact & ECW? Did I mention that I must have lost my mind to watch this entire match in one sitting?

Minoru Suzuki and AKINO vs Mecha Mummy and Female Mecha Mummy:
Just the concept of a female Mecha Mummy made me want to go out of my way to see this match. Both Mummies were equipped with his & her's matching cock knocking and power drill
hand attachments. Words can't describe the goofy mannerisms of Mecha. Kind of difficult to fathom that a former Pancrase star in Suzuki would be selling for cock knocking hand attachments from Mecha. Luckily Suzuki would not sell for both Mummies usage of their power drill attachments. For some reason the referee would sell the drills. This match is totally asinine. Minoru would win win a cradle pile driver. Unfortunately Mecha could not live up to my expectations from his classics from last year. I was actually disappointed with this match.

Blast From The Past: Tracy Smothers VS. The Wrestling Bear
Wrestling Bears go all the way back from the carnival days to all the way in to the 1990's. I was amazed to find out that wrestling legends like Superstar Billy Graham, Eddie Gilbert, Bruno Sammartino, and The Destroyer have all wrestled a Bear at one point in their career. Unfortunately I would later find out that the bear would usually be sedated and that turns my stomach as a pet owner/member of Russell Rescue. I'm amazed that some wrestling commissions would even sanction these matches. I'm amazed that people would even pay to see these matches. I'm sorry, but It's not like a bear can do highspots and have a four star classic. If you actually paid in thinking that the bear can actually do topes then shame on you.

The announcing by Gordon Solie makes this match priceless. Gordon is selling that the bear is quite a amateur wrestler by its ability to do a leg take down. Tracy provides a highspot by leap frogging over the bear. Gordon then mentions how the bear is "500 pounds of supple muscle". The match goes to the time limit. All i can say is WOW! Continental must have been already on its ass at this point to book a babyface against a bear.
