Oklahoma Scoop

NEWS
In his blog last week, Jim Ross announced that the second J. R.'s Family Bar-B-Que will open on July 14th. The restaurant is located off I-35 at the 19th Street exit in Moore.

In the same blog, Jim Ross said that last Tuesday's "Smackdown" was the first time he had been back to the Tulsa Convention Center to broadcast wrestling in what he thought was about 20 years. He reminiced about being there every other Sunday night taping UWF wrestling for Bill Watts, alongside his broadcast partner Michael Hayes.

At the "Smackdown" TV taping in Tulsa this past Tuesday, former TV announcer Michael Cole came out to say goodbye to the "Smackdown" fans, much like Jim Ross did the night before at the live "WWE RAW" telecast in Oklahoma City. As Cole was saying his goodbyes, Ross interrupted him and kicked him out for being a Texas fan.

MyNetworkTV in San Francisco is already running ads with Jim Ross and Triple H saying "Smackdown" is coming to the network.

When C. M. Punk defeated WWE RAW World Champion Edge for the title in Oklahoma City last Monday, it marked the first time a WWE title had changed hands in Oklahoma since Ric Flair defeated Carlito for the Intercontinental Title, and Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch defeated The Hurricane & Rosey for the WWE RAW Tag Team Titles at the "Unforgiven" pay-per-view event on September 18, 2005, which was also held in Oklahoma City. As far as we can determine, this is the first time that a recognised World Heavyweight Title has changed hands in the state.

The "WWE RAW" from Oklahoma City scored hours of of 3.43 and 3.58 for a composite of 3.5 cable rating, with an average audience of 5,150,000 viewers.

Ric Flair and Arn Anderson are not as close as they once were. The Flair divorce put a strain on their relationship since Flair's ex-wife and Anderson's wife are good friends.

WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair is getting about $10,000 per autograph session. That will buy a few gallons a gasoline, even at the current prices.

The new Ric Flair DVD comes out tomorrow (July 8th). One name not interviewed on the new DVD is Ricky Steamboat. He and Flair had a series of wonderful matches back in the 80's, and there seems to be no reason why he wouldn't be on there.

Here are some of the matches on the upcoming Ric Flair DVD:
Jack Brisco vs. Flair (8/18/82)
Kerry Von Erich vs. Flair (8/24/82)
Harley Race vs. Flair (8/31/83)
Dusty Rhodes & Magnum T. A., & Manny Fernandez vs. Flair, Ole Anderson, & Arn Anderson (listed as 12/15/82 but that would be off by probably four years)
Sting vs. Flair (the match that made Sting from the 1st Clash of Champions)
Terry Funk vs. Flair (Title match from Great American Bash PPV)
Roddy Piper vs. Flair (10/28/91 MSG)
Ricky Steamboat vs Flair (Spring Stampede 1994 - this was actually the most disappointing Flair-Steamboat match--which means it was just real good)
Triple H vs. Flair (2005 Taboo Tuesday)
Flair vs. Shawn Michaels (retirement match; Wrestlemania 24)

WWE "Smackdown" writer Michael Hayes got together with all the African-American wrestlers recently and apologized for what happened. He blamed it on his drinking problem and said deep down he is not a racist.

Several people within WWE was surprised to see Trevor Murdoch released. He was drafted from "RAW" to "Smackdown" because Michael Hayes was said to have had some creative ideas for him.

Jakks Pacific is releasing a Beth Phoenix-Maria two-pack. To view pictures of the set click here.

The schedule for this week's "MSG Classics" on the MSG Network is as follows:

8pm Eastern: Randy Savage vs. Tito Santana, Dynamite Kid vs. Brutus Beefcake, and Hulk Hogan & Hillbilly Jim vs. King Kong Bundy & John Studd

9pm Eastern: Roddy Piper vs. Repo Man, The Undertaker vs. Davey Boy Smith, a 20 Man Battle Royal, and Big Bossman vs. Rick Martel

WWE will be releasing a Mr. Perfect DVD and here are some of the matches that will be featured:

Curt Hennig vs. Eddie Gilbert (November 21, 1982)
Curt Hennig & Scott Hall vs. Jimmy Garvin & Steve Regal (AWA; November 26, 1985)
Curt Hennig vs. Terry Taylor (WrestleFest; July 31, 1988)
WWF Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect vs. The Texas Tornado (WWF; November 24, 1990)

Dos Caras, Jr. was reportedly in Tulsa last Tuesday for "Smackdown". It is unknown whether he was simply working backstage or if he received a tryout match prior to the event. Caras, Jr. is the nephew of Mil Mascaras and the son of pro wrestler Dos Caras. He is also a former fighter in Pride, noted for having his head kicked in by Mirko Cro Cop.

Ted DiBiase's youngest son Brett DiBiase, 20, is training in Tampa, FL with WWE developmental fed, Florida Championship Wrestling.

TNA announced they will hold two events in Oklahoma during their mid-August southwest tour. Saturday, August 16th they will be in Lawton at the Great Plains Coliseum. On Sunday, August 17th, they will be in Muskogee at the Muskogee Civic Center. Bell time for both shows is 8pm. Tickets for the Lawton show go on sale Friday, July 11th at the Great Plains Coliseum, on the Ticketmaster.com website, or by phone at (580) 357-1483. Among the stars scheduled to appear at both shows include TNA World Champion Samoa Joe, Booker T, Christian Cage, Robert Roode, TNA World Tag Team Champions The Latin American Xchange (Homicide & Hernandez), TNA World X Division Champion Petey Williams, and many more.

Voting for the 6-Man Tag Team Match stipulation featuring Christian Cage, A. J. Styles, & Rhino vs. Team 3D (Brother Ray & Brother Devon) & Kurt Angle will start when the "Victory Road" pay-per-view comes on the air.

Frank Trigg was never a pro wrestling fan and actually bashed it on several occasions, including in a conversation with Mike Goldberg, a month before he made his TNA debut. Trigg will be debuting in the ring soon most likely as a tag partner of Kurt Angle against A. J. Styles and possibly Christian Cage. Mike Tenay actually had the idea to bring Trigg in and TNA is paying him very well.

The latest edition of "TNA Spin Cycle" is now available to view. Guests include Frank Trigg, Roxxi, Kaz, and Jim Cornette on the panel, and 2 members of Team Japan doing dirty laundry with Shark Boy. You can view it by clicking here.

Former AWA World Champion Stan Hansen is working on an English language autobiography to be released late this year or early next year.

Doug Somers was a guest on Rubber Guard Radio recently. You can listen to the interview by clicking here.

Colt Toombs, the son of Roddy Piper, was successful in his MMA debut on June 20th, defeating Steve Quick in an amateur fight in 1:38. Piper's son trains out of Matt Lindland?s Team Quest.

Joe Anoai, the son of Sika of The Wild Samoans and brother of former WWE superstar Rosey, has signed with the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League.

Jody Hamilton (AKA The Assassin) was a guest on "Peach State Pandemonium" this past week and discussed his book "The Man Behind The Mask" and his 50 plus years in wrestling. To listen to the archive, click here.

It was reported that Erik Watts was among the fans in attendance at the NAWA Ring Champions event in Rome, GA on July 3rd.

The Nu Wrestling Entertainment show in Barcelona, Spain featuring the return of former WWE Champion Ultimate Warrior will be released on DVD in September.

Pro Wrestling Guerilla has put out a 9-hour DVD for $19.98 through Big Division Entertainment at www.bvdvd.com. Matches date back to Samoa Joe vs Bryan Danielson in 2004, and feature Adam Pearce, Frankie Kazarian, C.M. Punk, Christopher Daniels, Jack Evans, Super Dragon, A. J. Styles, James Gibson (AKA Jamie Noble), Davey Richards, Roderick Strong, Cima, Pac, Kaz Hayashi and many others.

Honky Tonk Man, Iron Sheik (drawing little attention), Dawn Marie, Gail Kim, Al Snow, Scotty 2 Hotty, Virgil, Christy Hemme, George Steele, and Mick Foley were at the Wizard World Chicago convention over the weekend.

Oklafan would like to congratulate Dexter Hardaway and Talon on their wedding last week. They were officially married on July 1st.
