MISSY'S MANOR: Independent wrestling wars, Fan Slam Convention, WSU recap

MISSY'S MANOR: Independent wrestling wars, Fan Slam Convention, WSU recap

Posted: Jun 27th 2008 By: mikeiles

Last Saturday I worked for WSU in Boonton, N.J. The WSU show had many changes that were caused by indy nonsense. What is indy nonsense? That's when a wrestling promotion/wrestling school [ECPW] in Lake Hiawatha, New Jersey has to deal with a scrupulous rival promoter, hanger on, or total scum bag that tries to get them banned from housing any wrestling promotions in their building.

The ramifications is the fans get screwed out of a show that they paid to see. The wrestlers miss out on a pay day. The promoter risks losing any costs that he fronted up in advance in building costs, talent, plane tickets, and having to refund a gate. The building owner [ECPW] can't house regular shows or lease their building out to other promotions. The end result is a wrestling town is destroyed.

The WSU promotion runs out of the ECPW wrestling school that is owned by Gino Caruso. The building has housed indy wrestling for over seventeen years. All of a sudden zoning laws developed. Usually this is the result of somebody stirring trouble. WSU decided to still run in the building, despite the zoning laws. They figured nobody in the community would find out if they only advertise on the internet. Luckily WSU decided to run in another building that was ten minutes away.

There is no reason to have indy wrestling wars. Many of the promotions that run N.J. are student shows that have a few name value wrestlers on it. There business plan is that the students will work for free/or for little $$$ and than sell tickets to friends and family. Obviously nobody is going to get rich off this business model. But ring experience is what the wrestlers are seeking.

Unfortunately many towns in N.J. are saturated with so many promotions. They have groups that use big name indy wrestlers, family shows, student shows, and groups that use students and wrestlers that I never heard of. Let the fans pick and choose what promotion they want to support. The only problem is the damage that a crappy promotion causes to everybody.

False advertising scares fans from coming back to future shows. Horrible shows that come across as back yard wrestlers with a ring is a big problem in killing off towns and buildings. This makes it hard for any reputable promotion to come back to a town or building, since the fans feel they got burnt already. I try to work with what I perceive as reputable promotions. I always try to do my homework in advance in asking others if the promoter is legitimate. I'm too crazy to be chasing after promoters who run shows that they cancel or getting stiffed on pay.

Another problem with the WSU show was a few no shows. This happens to every promotion. I was always taught that you have to make every reasonable effort to make it to a show. There is always a fan who made the financial decision to buy their ticket to see a specific wrestler. This also causes a wrestler to possibly lose their spot or a progressing story line if their opponent goes AWOL. This can be a major headache for a promoter if he doesn't have adequate time to make changes. A courtesy of a phone call is a must, no matter what the excuse it could be.

The WSU show had several no shows. Nicole Bass [illness], Foxxy [car problems], and Alexa Thatcher [no show}. The first two workers gave the promoter a phone call. The third wrestler didn't. This surprised me big time. I have all the respect in the world for Alexa Thatcher as a wrestler. I believe Alexa will have a very promising career if she is dedicated. Alexa has already worked in Japan. That is no small feat in this day and age.

I can't think of too many American women who have toured Japan in recent years. I don't know if her no show was personal, emergency, burn out, personal demons, or declining passion for the business. This is not my business to speculate. I'm very sure there were fans who were disappointed that she didn't work on the show. Alexa provides decent matches and is over with the fans. This was also heart breaking for the promoter. He had big plans on giving Alexa a long term story line and a possible title. I hope Alexa is fine and can come back to the WSU. I would feel horrible if she decides to go the route in destroying her reputation by no showing other promoters. I hope everything can be resolved with Alexa and WSU. Hopefully this is the only bump in the road for a very sucessful career for Alexa.

Now let me give you my "Missy Recap" of the show. The show took place in a movie thearter. The ring was placed on a stage. The building looked very cool. Unfortunately the show went four hours. No indy show should go past three hours. The fans get burnt out. This results in wrestlers not getting heat from a burnt out audience. The problem came from the lengthy ring entrances. The locker room to the ring is a bit of a walk. Hopfully this can be corrected on the next show. The double DVD tapings are usually a tight 3 hour show. This makes the shows more enjoyable to the audience.

Let me give you a summary of the big matches and angles. Everybody worked hard, but I'm too lazy to write and aknowledge every match. Hopefully nobody feels slighted if I don't mention their match.

Mercedes Martinez beat Kacee Carlisee: Mercedes dominated the match. Mercedes ran down Alexa no-showing on the mic. Hopefully they can work a program with each other. I would hate to see Alexa buried.

Missy's Manor: Becky Bayless [TNA should hire her] cut a promo on me. Becky and I went back and forth on the mic on our on going feud. Becky announced her tag team partner and new friend as Angelina Love. Angelina rules! She had the classic line, "there isn't enough brown paper bags for N.J.". Becky would be a great addition to "The Beautiful People". She is a great heel and not another generic blonde. Please hire Becky. That way I never have to work with her again. This confrontation set up Dawn Marie [super hot mom] VS. Becky Bayless match.

Awesome Kong destroyed Roxxie Cotton and Cindy Rogers in back to back matches. Awesome Kong is so stiff and menacing live. Even wrestlers cringe on how tight she wrestles in person. You also have to applaud her opponents for doing a great job in selling and bumping for Kong.

Alicia made a surprise appearance. Alicia was a great heel on the early WSU shows. Her stiff brawls with Becky and Luna Vachon were great matches last year. Alicia left wrestling last year to pursuit a overseas College program. Every worker and fan was happy to see Alicia stop by on her College break.

Becky VS. Dawn Marie was a wild match. I got to manage Dawn against Becky with Angelina Love. I don't want to come off like a mark. But I'm glad to have managed against Becky [she's going to be the future of female heels] and Angelina Love [she is so over as a heel and she hasn't even hit her peak yet]. Dawn lost to Becky, due to the interference of Angelina Love by count out. Portia Perez made the save for Dawn. This sets up a tag team match later in the show. Everything in this match went smoothly in personalities. Dawn plays a great baby face against two awesome heels. I'm very impressed with Angelina and Becky as a team. They can get heat. But not too much heat that turns them in to cool heels.

Angel Orsini faught Amy Lee in a wild match. This match had intensity. They came across as two workers who can give and take punishment. The match ended when Awesome Kong hit Amy Lee with a spinning back fist. The heel champ keeps her heat. This sets up a Amy Lee VS. Awesome Kong match for later in the show. Everything in the match made sense. The crowd ate it up big time.

Amy Lee beat Awesome Kong by DQ. Kong hit the ref. The crowd demanded a rematch. Too bad they have to wait for a future show. Old T.V. Booking 101. The fans got a taste that night. But they have to come back again for the sizzle.

Dawn Marie and Portia Perez beat Becky and Angelina Love in two minutes. They got a big pop from the crowd for having a short match. Too bad the card was running too long and this match had to be shortened. This could have been a much better match if it was given more time. I wanted to see more of Angelina and Becky as a team. Hopefully they can bring them both back for the next show.

Angel Orsini beat Mercedes Martinez: What a awesome match. Get the DVD. Angel and Mercedes are very smart workers. They started their match in the ring and built towards the out of the ring brawling. Once they got to the brawling, they knew when to peak the match. They brawled all over the thearter. They teased throwing each other off of a 20 foot balcony drop. They even threw each other from one balcony to another balcony. After all of this brawling, Angel scored the win with a freaking small package. This simple finish got big time heat. This made Angel in to such a great heel champion. Angel impresses me everytime I see her live.

I'm glad I got to announce and manage on this show for WSU. The show had many great matches and workers. My favorite part was managing Dawn against Becky with Angelina. I can't wait for the next WSU show as a worker and as a fan of the industry.

I'm glad I had enough energy and enthusiasm to contribute to the WSU promotion. Earlier in the day I signed autographs at the Fan Slam convention in Totowa, N.J. Tommy Fierro did a very good job in running his 15th anniversary on running conventions.

I remember being booked by Tommy when he was 17 tears old. He was more organized and reputable as a teenager than most adults at the time. I always have a blast interacting with the fans. Its always great to see Buddy Roberts at his rare appearances. Buddy still rules. James J Dillon is always a gentleman when I talk to him. I'm glad the convention went smoothly for everybody. I had two hours to kill between the convention and the WSU show. Luckily I did my homework in advance and found a mall. Nothing like blowing all of my autograph earnings on shoes.
