The Scoop

The Scoop

Posted: Mar 20th 2017 By: Oklafan Staff

NEWS
John Cena will induct Kurt Angle into the WWE Hall of Fame during WrestleMania 33 weekend, but who will induct the legendary Rock-N-Roll Express? The speculation has centered around Jim Cornette, and even though his relationship with WWE has been fractured over the years, the feeling is that he won’t turn down the chance to honor Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson on a big stage. Jim Cornette appearing at a WWE event would obviously come as a surprise to many. The Wrestling Observer reached out to WWE and Cornette but neither would confirm or deny the story.

According to PWInsider.com, William Regal is NOT likely to be announced as a 2017 WWE Hall of Fame inductee, Yesterday the Site stated he was to be in this year class but it seems likely He will be for next year class. Typically, WWE announces the Warrior Award winner last, meaning this year’s class looks to be complete. As for celebrity inductions, there were rumors that Wendi Richter might be inducting Cyndi Lauper, however Lauper is in Australia over WrestleMania weekend so that’s unlikely to happen and WWE may go with Regis Philbin.

There will be new Legacy inductees for the WWE Hall of Fame class this year, according to PWInsider. This wing of the Hall was introduced last year to honor stars from the early years of pro wrestling. Names posthumously inducted last year were Frank Gotch, Ed Lewis, George Hackenschmidt, Mildred Burke, Art Thomas, Pat O’Connor, and Lou Thesz.

WWE Shop has released a new “Title Run” t-shirt for WWE Universal Champion Bill Goldberg.

Brock Lesnar is scheduled to appear tonight on "WWE Monday Night RAW" but WWE Universal Champion Bill Goldberg is not scheduled.

WWE has evaluated Bill Goldberg’s current run with the company and has deemed it a success, and is said to be open to doing business with him again in the future after WrestleMania this year.

Last Monday’s “Bring It To The Table” featured JBL, Corey Graves, and Peter Rosenberg discussing Brock Lesnar vs. WWE Universal Champion Bill Goldberg at WrestleMania 33. In regards to potential boos like their previous WrestleMania match had, Graves says WrestleMania 20 had different circumstances as both Superstars were leaving. Graves isn’t concerned with what happens from bell to bell as long as the stadium is full and fired up about what’s happening. JBL says the unknown is the draw to this match.

As you might imagine, the current speculation is that the Goldberg vs. Brock Lesnar match will not be long. The quick matches that Goldberg had against Brock Lesnar at "Survivor Series" and Kevin Owens at "Fastlane, as well as the Royal Rumble elimination of Lesnar, is to build Goldberg up as a dominant figure, just to be dethroned by Lesnar at the big show. Based on the current plans, Lesnar is scheduled to defeat Goldberg in quick fashion to conclude "WrestleMania 33" as the new WWE Universal Champion.

A. J. Styles addressed Daniel Bryan’s claim that he’s a flat-earther. He said “I am not a flat-earther, but there are some things that they say, [to which Styles responds] ‘huh, I never thought about it like that’. Here’s the thing, you don’t have to believe anything that’s told to you. Like you can always question anything. And although I’m not a flat-earther, there are some things that, like, make sense. But then again, satellites, the curvature of the Earth if you’re a sniper, you’ve got to take all that into account. I’m not a flat-earther, but they bring up some interesting points. It’s interesting and I think you should be able to question anything you want. And you don’t have to agree with everybody.”

Things got ugly between A. J. Styles and Shane McMahon last Tuesday night on "WWE SmackDown Live" but before the show faded to black, we got another match set for WrestleMania 33. Styles, who waited for Shane in the back throughout the show, ambushed him as soon as he rolled into the arena. Styles then proceeded to beat up Shane pretty bad before throwing him through a car window, cutting his head open. Fit Finlay and Renee Young came to the rescue of Shane and Styles walked away. In a subsequent backstage segment, Styles challenged Bryan to fire him, and Bryan did just that before Styles was escorted out of the building by police. Before the night was over though, Shane McMahon came out on stage and told Styles that he just got himself a WrestleMania 33 opponent. This will be Shane’s second WrestleMania match since his return to the WWE. His first one was an epic Hell In A Cell match against The Undertaker last year. This is also A. J. Styles’ second WrestleMania match, his first was last year against Chris Jericho.

On Tuesday, SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan “fired” A. J. Styles after A. J.’s brutal attack on SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon. Shane then closed the show by announcing that he will be wrestling A. J. at WrestleMania 33. It has also been noted how despite the Styles vs. Shane announcement, WWE was still running with the angle of Bryan firing Styles from SmackDown. In an update on that storyline, they have now moved Styles to the WWE Alumni roster. It’s worth mentioning that WWE has not officially announced Styles vs. Shane. Speculation is that Shane will "re-hire" Styles for the WrestleMania match.

While SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon announced that he will be facing A. J. Styles at WrestleMania 33, WWE is still going with the storyline of SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan firing Styles earlier in the night. They have a new poll asking fans if Styles deserved to be fired by Bryan. Early results had 52% voting, “No, all is fair in the land of opportunity that is SmackDown.” The rest voted, “Yes, AJ Styles’ attack on Shane McMahon was heinous and the penalty had to be steep.”

Last Tuesday's "WWE SmackDown Live", featuring a main event segment with Shane McMahon built by the feud with A. J. Styles, drew 2.628 million viewers. This is down from the previous week’s 2.738 million viewers. SmackDown was #7 in viewership on cable for the night and was #2 in the 18-49 demographic. In comparison, Monday’s RAW drew 3.232 million viewers, up from last week’s 3.216 million viewers.

Mojo Rawley, Natalya, Apollo Crews, A. J. Styles, and SmackDown Women’s Champion Alexa Bliss visited the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh on Tuesday.

WWE commentator Corey Graves is apparently not looking forward to a potential A. J. Styles vs. Shane McMahon at "Wrestlemania 33" next month. Graves stated on WWE Network’s “Bring It To The Table” program “The prospect of A. J. Styles vs. Shane McMahon does absolutely nothing for me. I am a fan of what Shane McMahon brings as a character to the show. Obviously, he’s paid his dues [and] he’s been around the business for his entire life.” He noted that Shane has created some memorable WrestleMania moments but “when you look back – that’s all you really remember is Shane McMahon being suplexed through the glass at King Of The Ring by Kurt Angle [and] coming off the top at Hell in a Cell.” Graves called Styles an artist and he can give fans a full bell-to-bell experience from start to finish. Graves did state that he is excited for anything involving Styles because he believes that Styles is one of the greatest wrestlers of our generation. Peter Rosenburg asked if Graves means that McMahon can’t keep up with Styles. Graves replied, “You’re absolutely right, that’s exactly what I’m saying.”

A. J. Styles may be moving to the RAW roster after "WrestleMania 33" with The New Day moving to SmackDown. Ideas are also being pitched for Roman Reigns to move to SmackDown as well.

Mick Foley wants to know who the next RAW GM should be, via his Facebook page. He posted "Things really get rolling on the new season of Holy Foley when WWE Raw Commissioner Stephanie McMahon – WWE stops by for dinner – and refuses to leave! Join us for a season full of highbrow high jinx only on WWE Network! OK, none of that is actually happening – a new season or Steph moving in – but I always got a kick out of this photo (taken pre-haircut, in our #McMahonFoleyConnection high-fiving days) and hope that some of you do too. I also think it’s indicative of the fun I have had working with Stephanie (although the past few weeks have been a little rocky) and of a friendship spanning 18 years. Assuming Mrs Foley’s baby boy gets the boot sometime in 2017, who would you like to see in the GM role?"

WWE announced this week that former TNA star Wes Brisco was among those at this week’s WWE Performance Center tryouts in Orlando, FL. He is the son of longtime WWE employee Gerald Brisco. The part of the announcement listing Brisco reads "Eight-year veteran Wes Brisco is the son and nephew of WWE Hall of Famers Gerald & Jack Brisco, respectively. He used to compete for NXT’s predecessor, Florida Championship Wrestling, and has also wrestled internationally, including for New Japan Pro Wrestling."

WWE announced last week the release of Jack Swagger. They announced "WWE has come to terms on the release of Jack Swagger as of today, March 13, 2017. WWE wishes Swagger the best in all his future endeavors." As noted he former World Heavyweight Champion revealed last week that he had requested his release from the company after being unhappy with the way he was being booked. Swagger promised fans we will see more of him around the wrestling world in the near future but he is under a standard non-compete with WWE.

Jeff Jarrett, Ed Nordholm, and Jeremy Borash of Impact were in Monterrey, Mexico for Asistencia Asesoría y Administración's "Rey de Reyes" event. It was announced during the event that Impact Wrestling and AAA had agreed to a new partnership. According to Impact Wrestling President Ed Nordholm, the company will be taking part in a working relationship with AAA, who is one of the two main promotions in Mexico. There is no word on when new talent could be coming to or from Impact Wrestling and, according to PWInsider.com, this does not change the relationship with Crash Wrestling, also based in Mexico. That is most interesting to say the least, as Crash and AAA pretty much hate each other. Impact also recently formed a partnership with Pro Wrestling NOAH in Japan.

Dan Severn, Manny Fernandez, Steve Keirn, Cryme Time, Brooke Adams, Tanea "Rebel" Brooks, and George South have been added to this year's WrestleCon in Orlando, FL.

Oklafan congratulates Mr. Nasty who recently celebrated 6 months as UWE Heavyweight Champion. He defeated Brian Breaker for the title on September 17, 2016 at UWE's "Showdown 7" event in Tahlequah.

Oklafan congratulates Angel Williams on his recent engagement to his fiancée Tera on March 18th.

Oklafan extends condolences to Nytronis A'Teo on the passing of his mother on March 11th.

Oklafan extends condolences to Mark Wilson on the passing of his uncle.

Oklafan extends condolences to the family and friends of Dennis Stamp, who passed away after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was believed to be 69 years old. Stamp began his professional career in 1971, but was an outstanding amateur. He initially worked for Verne Gagne and was named the AWA Rookie of the Year in 1971. He would go on to have outstanding runs, most notably in the Amarillo territory, but also out in California. By the mid-1980s, Stamp's career had come full circle as he was often seen on AWA television, serving as enhancement talent. Stamp is perhaps most famous for his appearance in the Barry Blaustein film "Beyond the Mat", where he served as Terry Funk's personal referee for Funk's retirement match against Bret Hart. Stamp's frequently uttered phrase "I'm not going. I'm not booked" became material for many internet memes in later years. Stamp racked up many titles during his career, including two runs as 1/2 of the TSW United States Tag Team Champions. His first run began on February 13, 1973 when he teamed with Bull Bullinski and defeated Yalu Fuji & Chati Yokouchi for the belts. That first title reign only lasted one week, when they would drop the titles to The Hollywood Blondes. Stamp would then team with Dewey Robertson and defeat Rip Tyler & Eddie Sullivan for his second run with the belts on June 7, 1973. This run would be longer than the first, but still relatively short, ending sometime in August 1973 when they lost the titles to Alex Perez & El Gran Tapio. Stamp has 20 documented Oklahoma appearances. The earliest came on May 8, 1972 when he wrestled Guillotine Gordon to a draw at a TSW event. His last appearance also occurred in Tulsa at a TSW event on October 1, 1979 when he defeated Ted Heath.
