-On August 9, 1933, Nichols was driving with 3 other wrestlers to matches in Oklahoma City, when they hit a 5-year old girl who ran into the road and killed her. Although he was cleared of any criminal negligence in the accident, he was haunted by this event for the rest of his life. His own daughter was 5 years old at the time of the accident.
-Fractured his legs in a parachute jump in September 1935. Although he would return to action a year later, he would be forced to retire prematurely as a result of this injury.
-Passed away on December 15, 1956 at the age of 58 by committing suicide, taking his own life with a self inflicted gunshot wound.
